Dell Latitude 7490 (i5-8350U, FHD) Laptop Review

Reliable business partner. Today's Latitude 7490 configuration packs a quad-core Core i5-8350U and conventional M.2 SATA storage, and it makes a few more cuts to deflate the cost a bit. Even so, this remains an impressive machine. How does this configuration stand up to its competitors?

Your review is poorly articulated. How do you know anything about the thermal system. The thermals are meant to increase especially while idling.

You are taking off points when it's not necessary.
Dell have really pulled their socks up and have vastly improved the Latitude 7000 series in the past 2 or so years.

My opinion of the thermals did/does not affect the scoring of the category; it's purely mathematical, objective, based on the measurements alone.

I'm sorry you feel this way about the wording of the review; I personally felt it turned out quite well. However, at the very least, the temperatures on the bottom of the laptop while idling should be improved (or some option for better cooling provided than that offered by the Command Power Manager utility, which hardly helps); competitors such as the X1 Carbon experience no such thermal imbalances on the bottom and as such are quite a bit more comfortable to use on the lap under typical conditions.

It's an opinion, but that's why it's in the article. Not sure how familiar with our outlet you are, but a 90% overall score is actually rather phenomenal. This is a very good machine, and it was scored as such.

How on earth can you figure out which panel comes with the 7490 model you order?! Please help.
Neither Dell or my reseller seems to know, I've been searching for this over more than 3 weeks. It has to end now.

The panel in this review seems good, but Dell has like 4 or 5 more options available for a non-touch with this resolution. Where the contrast differs quite worryingly.

Can you specify exactly which B140HAN you had in this review? There are maaaany that starts with those letters/numbers.
Also, how do you find out the panel, with moninfo.exe?

Any thoughts on the "N140hce-G52, Innolux" panel which also seems to be an option? It's a jungle.... ???

I'm surprised people have such obsession over a few megabytes and grams here and there.... The highest priority with ANY laptop should be ratio between price, keyboard and screen! This very latitude excels in ALL those (at least with the panel you had here....don't know about the rest!) :-\

Why is this screen so much better than the touch version with i7 you reviewed in the past? Was about to buy one but reading this review this screen seems so much better, but then  see people saying the screen is a lottery as even the non-touch has different versions available...

Did you ever figure out how...

the i7, 2x the RAM, w/ touchscreen, and w/ NVMe version of this laptop somehow got 2% longer battery life?

I want to maximize battery life, but that 15% faster single-core performance advantage of the i7 is big.

As the MobileMark 2014 results really favour the i5, by 20% longer battery life, according to BapCo's website. Type "bapco results latitude 7490" into Google; I can't post a link unfortunately due to my low post count. :(

Please mention that you configuration has SLP screen, which has better power usage characteristics compared to normal configuration (unsure about the display properties)
