Wtih Tegra 4 to the top? All good things are worth waiting for: Nvidida's Tegra 4 SoC celebrates its long awaited debut. Toshiba's new 10 inch tablet Excite Pro combines the high-end chip with a high-resolution WOXGA display, tremendously fast 802.11ac radio and speakers by Harman/Kardon. Our test reveals what other highlights the newcomer has in store.

Lol u kidding right? Recommending a super hot throttling tablet is ridiculous.

They say throttling is not uncommon, and even with throttling it  has enormous performance.  As for super hot, well they never say super hot.  They do say the upper left area is uncomfortably hot, and if you have to hold it there, simply flip the tablet upside down.  So while not perfect, it is the best performing tablet at the moment.  That is why they recomended it.

I'm quite disappointed with the GPU performance of Tegra yet again. The shield gave hope that the performance would at least be among the top, but the benchmarks suggest that with a tablet power-footprint, Tegra 4 will have trouble moving significantly past tablets of last year. This is especially sad considering that the GPU performance in this tablet is  thoroughly dominated by modern smartphones! The Adreno 330 scores around 23fps in the very shader-laden GFXBench 2.7 T.Rex test, around 40% higher, in a mobile phone SoC!

Tegra 4's brute-force approach to computation is certainly falling behind the various efficiency optimizations of its competitors. I have no doubt that the Kepler core will fare much better than Tegra 4, but I'm now doubtful as to weather a desktop core with smaller focus on perf/watt, can compete with a mobile GPU on the same die area, and that aggressively optimises for power. Certainly power consumption in a battery powered device is a huge determinant of performance.

Sorry Tegra, the hype has cleared, and your brand is now synonymous with mid-range performance. Better luck next year.

I am typing this on my excite pro. Honestly, the heating is not an issue - if it were metal, it would be different.  Because the backing is plastic, the heat dissipates, so there is only a slight temperature increase in real world usage. In fact,  the only time I managed to get any sort of uncomfortable heat was playing riptide gp2 with every graphics setting maxed out. It is not a huge issue.
Battery - you don't use a tablet all day every day, and if you are,  you're probably near a plug socket. With normal use I'll get nearly 2 days worth out of the device...  Turn on power saving and it'll work miracles.
Stutter is prevalent through the first week or so, but having had it for nearly a month, I either don't notice it, or its disappeared.  It is also not an issue.

I can quite happily recommend this tablet to anyone on the lookout.

This is now available for £169, wonder what ratings it would get at that price.
Superb machine, gets a bit warm with certain games, but I've had no issues, the screen, camera and connectivity, along with the quad core 1.8 processor for that sort of money is unreal.

If the top glass breaks you will see how good (bad) the Toshiba service is, the replacement spare part is more expensive than a new tablet...and it breaks easily.

I am considering returning mine because of very low volume and the design of the tablet makes the volume increase apps lower the volume even more. The quality of the sound is great but is hard to hear - when listening to talk radio I miss a lot of words and can't understand what is being discussed.

I have this tablet and it's useless. After a few minutes of use it'll throttle itself to the point where it's like watching a slide-show, even on non-graphically intensive things like Clash of Clans.

How did this reviewer not experience this at all?

I am sick of every review comparing any product to ipads, iphones or any other ishits outs there. i obviously never had one and will never have one. it does not mean anything for you to compare a toshiba tablet to an apple product. if someone wants an ipad, they go buy it. why? why cant you just make a straight forward review, but not a relative review?
