With a focus on minimalism and performance, Serpent OS aims to help users get the most out of their hardware and streamline their workflow. The release comes four years after Ikey Doherty announced he would be working on a new Linux distro. Despite some problems in development, Serpent OS has made it to the pre-alpha stage and is now available to download.

Normally I'm sick and tired of seeing pointless new distro's popping up, just regurgitating other peoples work with no real benefit and simply a theme thrown on the desktop environment.

But to see someone starting from scratch, redesigning their package manager, hoping learning from Intel's Linux for file structure and speed, and coming up with original work, we will get something special.

Interesting to see this group of devs not using Budgie. I use Gnome daily but it has so many issues in user experience. PaperWM is the only reason I stick with Gnome. Any desktop environment who doesn't support tray icons out of the box, is simply going down the wrong road.

It's worth pointing out that Ikey was working at Intel when they did Clear Linux and he is the one that developed a lot of / most of what made it so rapid.

Using GNOME is the opposite of "focus on minimalism and performance" right off the bat.

Yeah but Rust

Wayland ?  Pipewire ? As a broke musician I'm interested in squeezing every bit of performance I can out of dated hardware.

Audio latency over USB to me is the deal breaker. Under 600ms, ok Anything above that, NOPE

Hmm! I'll have to keep an eye on this distro! The fact that it's built from the ground up is super duper intriguing to me, as are some of its safety features!

I'm a happy Gnome user already via Fedora 40 (having come from a history of primarily KDE and primarily Ubuntu Studio), so the fact that it uses Gnome - for me at least - is actually a perk, though I do at least concede the previous commenter's point that Gnome is definitely not a friend of "lightweight". The good news for everyone else, though, is that it sounds like support for other DEs is in the works! So maybe when it reaches final production stage there'll be other options.

Yeah, this thing sounds really intriguing! I have a couple old computers lying around that I use to try out other distros. Maybe once this thing is out of alpha and beta, I'll give it a go! In fact, if I do, maybe I'll even go with Cosmic instead of Gnome! I've been really curious about Cosmic! Or else DDE. If there's any DE that would be a contender for me of "liking even better than Gnome", it'd be DDE. :-)

Cheers!
