The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X with its 16 cores, 32 threads, a boost clock of up to 5.7 GHz, and a 170 W TDP is the flagship chip in the Zen 5 lineup. According to a series of Cinbench R23 multi-core benchmark runs at varying Package Power Tracking (PPT) settings, the Ryzen 9 9950X scores more than 48,000 points when all power limits are lifted.

Not bad, but also not great. Only above 80W it is slightly better than Zen 4. At 40W it is much worse. I don't get all this excitment. Especially it's desktop, just normal generation to generation improvment. Nothing to threat competitors...

These CPUs are not meant to be run at <100 or even 200W, and additionally, they are desktop CPUs, so that comparison is pointless. However, such a comparison would be VERY meaningful for mobile CPUs - even when they run at measly 5W you'd want them to perform comparitevly well because that means better laptop battery life.
