Apple is not happy about it, but the company now allows EU users to sideload apps onto its iPhones. Apple announced changes to how it handles apps on iOS in order to align with the European Union's Digital Markets Act. It also announced new App Store pricing and an App Store Fee calculator, which has some developers concerned.

EU can start saying goodbye to good popular free apps, for 2 000 000 installs of FREE app from any source developer has to pay apple 45000. Also pirates who thought it'll now be a pirate heaven like Android got nothing. Apple trolled EU good, get your popcorn and enjoy the outrage.

Sorry haha but Apple did this as defiance, not a troll, and as Microsoft can attest for when they have tried pulling shenanigans like this, it only leads to financial pain. Apple is actually acting worse than Microsoft has in matters like this and their nonsensical explanations that any two-year-old can see through are going to bite them in the butt and hard. Apple is going to regret this big time as the bad PR that will arise from the drama will haunt them for years to come. And right as Qualcomm's Snapdragon X is hitting the market, Microsoft can easily frame themselves as the knight in shining armor and fair option of the two which will certainly hurt MacBook and iPad sales.

Or just use Android where you as a user have a choice to install whatever tf you want on your own device.

We are at a point where people who haven't helped themselves are too far from help. All the information is out there free and accessible but people choose to fund their own demise instead.

If that calculation is correct then it is a big FU to EU. Apple will take in more cash from apps on other stores than from it's own app store. This is clearly to steer developers to their own store.
Wonder if this will pass the smell test for EU regulators? They can require that Apple divorce itself from the whole "sideloading" process. Then Apple will cry "but what about security" and if EU just tells that security will be the purview of the app store provider then Apple will loose at least this argument for requiring this frankly absurd cut of the revenue.

Mmm, let me buy an iPhone to play a meh PS4 game on a small screen instead of buying a PS4 for fraction of the iPhone price and play it on a large screen in better detail instead and have enough money left to buy a great Android phone too. Beautiful logic of sticking with a phone because of one game (it's not like you have a larger choice to choose anyways, lmao). Ask your Tim Cook to hurry up, you know, you have no your own will nor choice to do what you want but you want to play so... Let Tim allow you to play. Just make sure to pay even more money to do even less with what you "own". 🍏🐑.

This is to steer developers away from EU market. And no, it will not affect Apple sales. Europeans will simply create apple IDs in US,UK,whatever nonEU country is nearest and live on without sideloading. No one actually even wanted it except Epic, Spotify, Google and pirates. Spotify wants to sell you goods and show you their ads. Epic wants to create an alternate game store and have that 30% cut for themselves. Google is just attacking Apple money everywhere it can. Pirates wanted to pirate, obviously. The rest of stupid mob was lied they will also benefit from it, but no. Indie devs would just die out if it was FFA android-like sideloading. Also you'd never see a single pay-once AAA game on mobile platform where everyone could just pirate it - much like you don't see them on Android despite platform is capable.

It's Apple way to pull out of market without pulling out of market. This destroys both quality and quantity of apps in EU, only lootbox gacha ad pay to win stuff can survive. Or apps with downloads < 1 mil (useless apps mostly).

Shrinking ray to fit PS4 and TV in your pocket will be quite expensive though. And it's not one game of course.

Always that argument ("argument"?); peak gaming, everyone is playing games on the go, outside, especially in crowded places. Nice.

Of course it's not. But the choice is limited. Consume what Apple allows you to consume, never question.

Ah yes, S24 Ultra is the only phone to get there. No wonder that Apple fans can't see past one choice when they don't know for choice at all; seriously, only you "Timmies" are strongly against having any form of freedom and choice what tf to do with your own money; the less you know the better, it's impressive. And then you happily present that as a huge victory and the way to go. Lol.

Quote from: Andrew Id on January 26, 2024, 12:02:05yeah and guess what switch is the best selling console
Because it's the cheapest console to get, yet it is closely followed by quite more expensive PS5. And then you turn around yourself and you don't really see people starring at their screens and playing games wherever you take a look, assuming you leave your home at all though.

True but who even cares about games on phones; is that all you do on your phone so that's why you need an iPhone to play PS ports? What about all other apps? You do know that they exist, right? It's not just games to install (and to get affected by the point of this whole article here).

Am I reading this correctly? Did Apple reduce the cut it takes for apps from 30% to 10%? If so, then this likely was the single win from this whole EU law as everything else seems DoA.

It is not like Apple app store will disappear in EU. You will not need to actively avoid sideloading/changes for EU to make use of any features that are currently available.

  • PS5 - 22.5 million units (up 65% from 2022)
  • Switch - 16.4 million units (down 18% from 2022)
  • Xbox Series X/S - 7.6 million units (down 15% from 2022)
Horrible numbers, yeah. Source.

Sure they do. Last time I checked, literally seven minutes ago, people were talking to each other, walking alone or with someone else, sitting in a restaurant (where I was too) and eating their food... This morning in the gym people were doing their workouts (and who knows, maybe some of them were grinding Standoff 2 during their short breaks), while yesterday in IMAX most people paid their ticket to watch The Beekeeper (decent movie, nothing wow) instead to sit there and play Candy Crush.

I know that majority of people under 22 y.o. (and being in my 30s I'm not old either, I even still play competitive CS2 - for money) can't understand that there's a world larger than a 6.7" screen and there is more things to do in life but to play games on phones (and think about themselves as "the elite gamers of the gaming industry") but they will get there soon... Most likely with the help of the Apple Vision Pro.
