Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5 miss official range at all temperatures, VW ID.4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E perform well in summer

The immensely successful electric SUV falls short of its EPA range of 326 miles in all tested scenarios according to Consumer Reports, which also couldn't confirm the Hyundai Ioniq 5's official range. Two notable Tesla Model Y competitors, the Ford Mustang Mach-E and VW ID.4, manage to surpass their advertised range in the summer.

I mean, I guess that sucks, but in this case, it still gets more range than all the other cars tested, except one (by one mile). I've definitely noticed I have to charge more frequently this summer, but I also live in AZ and we had 31 straight days of over 110*.

Range loss with a fully blasting AC is probably similar to fully blasting heat. They didn't test at hot conditions but I'd think 110 degrees would be similar to 30 degrees as far as range is concerned.

The range loss in the cold weather is not because of using the heater. The batteries perform worse in cold climates.

Is this a reliable source as ive seen u tube videos where tesla has easily out performed its competitors and theres no efficiency figures provided either .

Which Model Y? There are so many configurations, with some having different battery chemistries. Was it a sold as a "long range" varient?

I am surprised about the Ioniq5...I have the new Ioniq 6; which is the same drivetrain as the Ioniq 5 but much more aerodynamic body style. It is advertised at 320 or so miles range but I have been averaging close to 400 miles this summer. I drive reasonably and use A/C from time to time and use regen braking a lot. The key is that I have been averaging approximately 5 miles per kwh...so the 77 kw battery gets me close to 400(although in practice I keep it charged between 20-80%). Too little attention is paid to efficiency (e.g., miles per kWh) as opposed to pure range. I don't know if another EV with better efficiency than the Ioniq 6. The aerodynamic shape and regen braking are important.

You are suggesting EPA is fraudulent and corrupt and is not standardised. You testing methodology should be superior to EPA. Could you please share. I have seen better FUDs.

EPA average range combined city and highway driving

But it's better to just live in the same place you work and use a bike.

I have had both 2023 AWD Ioniq 5 and now my 2023 Tesla AWD Long range (Fremont built with 82KWH gross Panosonic batteries) Canada now Imports 77KWH Gross LG battery in the same model and the one thing that everyone forgets is the Glass roof, regardless of temp if the sun shines the AC works harder and in winter the reverse is true. Improve your range by using a reflective insulating glass roof cover and you'll see 11% range improvement in summer (temps over 30C) and 14% improve in winter temps under 4deg C.

Forget EPA as the industry has two methods both can sway the results either way, no consitantant comparible testing, that is EVA'S fault, just like gas mileage, which they finally fixed somewhat a few years ago, no they need to fix this whole EV range thing before we fault manufacturers.

Hans Vincent

Dear Bert,
That is right to the point.
There must be another reason for their glass roof, since this is never compatible with "maximising ev-energy efficiency" (bad/no insulation, a lot more weight, etc...), whatever they are trying to tell us.

Jeremy

It's about what I expect from Tesla and seeing as how they're currently facing class action lawsuits about this issue, maybe they will be required to revise their range estimates.

The fact that Ford out performed their range estimates implies that manufacturers can provide a realistic estimate or an overinflated estimate as Tesla has done.  Let's hope people remember that they now have options other than Tesla which has mostly not followed through on their promises to make affordable long range electric vehicles.

My lifetime efficiency in my Model Y is 240 Wh/mi at 23k miles. 75000 ÷ 240 = 312.5 mile range.

Measured by the car or measured independently?
