Asus ROG Strix G16 G614JZ laptop review: Clear the stage for the RTX 4080

The ROG Strix G16 is the third Strix we've reviewed in a still-ripening 2023. Based on recent experience, the choice to downsize to a 16-inch model is a good one. We see that the 4080 fits perfectly between the RTX 4090 and RTX 4070. In the ROG Strix G16, the GeForce graphics card is finally able to show off its capabilities.

I know that aesthetics are subjective thing to talk about but considering that year after year each OEM (even MSI!) updates/redesign their mid and high range lineup to look significantly more polished, professional and nicer AKA more aesthetically pleasing than their predecessors, it's pretty strange to notice that only Asus is doing to opposite and makes uglier and uglier devices. Weird.

Because of the price. Yeah, I know 2000+ isn't cheap but it's considered the new budget tier at least among RTX 4080 pricing of laptops. A bit like those RTX 3060 laptops for 1000 some years ago. If you want solid build quality, you're either gonna have to downgrade to an RTX 4070/4060 for the same price or pay like 1000 more, so like 3000+ for RTX 4080 in a solid chassis.

Good screen, a very good performance in 4080, pitty the chassis, hope the CPU choice that can be changed. Coil whine is not acceptable for a laptop, Point.
No numpad limits use for graphics applications.

Again fake "240Hz" panel. Really 165-170Hz. The contrast is disappointing. 2.5k sucks for games when fps is not enough, switching to fhd will result in a guaranteed blurry picture, unlike switching 4k to fhd where everything will be perfectly sharp.

The second M.2 slot covers the M.2 slot for WLAN - as usual with Asus - hello increased noise on WLAN from SSD heating. And vice versa.

The memory is slow and poorly tuned in terms of timings, which immediately affected the AIDA64 tests. The loss to models from other manufacturers is obvious.

The noise is the wildest even in medium load. The model is very noisy.

The keyboard, as usual, is completely disfigured from the classic one - it is impossible to work on such in office applications and develop software; laptop, unlike the Legion series is not a one-stop all-in-one solution.

It is not clear to me who buys such models, although it all depends on the price compared to competitors. Maybe one of the consumers will fall for such a "miracle"...

DPC latency is worrying, and it seems to be the case currently with all 13th gen laptops, it's present in other brands as well. I hope some driver update will fix it.

All laptops and PCs on Vista+ have poor latency. In W10+, it became terrible.

The last system with great latency is XP. That is why this OS was so loved by sound engineers and audiophiles.

Nowhere else have I been able to get the system and software settings so that I can start the sound for playback, for example in foobar2k, run AIDA64 and a couple of browsers and that nothing is interrupted in the sound. Under XP - the perfect sound without interruptions.

I'm only on XP and I watch movies on the projector and listen to music - I only have it for this and left it. In addition, there is an ideal Dolby Headphone for headphones, which is no longer available since Vista+ in Realtek drivers - cut out due to licensing restrictions. In the same place, watching a movie with headphones is a pleasure, and the picture in dynamics is almost perfect, compared to the W7-W10. On the same hardware.

how is this 13980hx getting 9.5 hours of battery life. I see terrible battery life of same model. same unit tested everywhere with 4-5h of battery life. 9.5 hrs is wild. I would love to get this if it has battery life of 9+ hours as claimed here.

Or am i missing something?

WLAN battery duration presumes not using the dGPU. The tests mentiones idle consumption 10+W and the battery has 90Wh so 9h is possible for light idle use. 9:45 means less than 10W so some measurement must be slightly off.

This is the mode when the usefulness of a laptop, even in office software, is zero.

Why do you say its fake "240hz" panel? Can you elaborate pls?

Divide 1000 by the average B2W/G2G response time and compare to the claimed 1000/240.
This panel is fast enough to ignore the response, but it is not "240"Hz.
This is an almost honest panel at 165Hz as the panels declared as "165" should have been. Which obviously misleads buyers. Of course, provided that you can trust the measurements in the review.
