Apple M2 Pro makes Geekbench debut with phenomenal generation-over-generation gains

A Mac Mini powered by Apple's shiny new M2 Pro SoC has shown up on Geekbench. It scores 1,952 and 15,013 points on the single and multi-core benchmark, outperforming its last-gen counterpart by a significant margin and even punches above its weight class by besting the M1 Max.

M2 is not that impressive. Just a refined M1 on smaller node, no major architectural improvements. The real improvements come with the M3 which target large IPC uplifts and greatly improved gpu with RT on 3nm. There is zero reason to upgrade M1 to M2.

The M1 was on th N5 wasn't it? The M2 is on the 2nd gen N5P so not sure how much is node related, it's more likely all architectural and more cores.

The new Mac Mini with M2 Pro chip delivers great performance that makes us wonder if Apple might continue with Mac Studio and instead only offer at the higher end the Mac Pro with M2 Ultra chip. Mac Mini with M2 Pro chip delivers  awesome speeds and power according to the available Geekbench results and other benchmarks. If you need a tough computer that has powerful performance and speed within reasonable budget this might be the one. With M2 Pro Mac Mini Apple has seriously cannibalized its more medium end product - Mac Studio. Time will demonstrate how these Mac Minis perform for gaming, but I would have preferred to see 64 GB Ram version. Currently Mac Studio with M1 Ultra  is the perfect alternative for gamers for example as it is able to deliver above 100 FPS gaming experience. Of course, the RTX3090 is faster than m1ultra and wins gaming category, however whether Mac Mini with M2 pro or new Macbook Pro can offer better gaming experience remains to be seen.
