Notch could be an issue when watching images in some aspect ratios in full screen. However in regards to videos - when was the last time you were watching anything without black bars top-bottom?
I do believe that notch makes more sense on a laptop than it does on an iPhone.

On a daily basis. Almost all content I watch on my laptop is 16:9, and it's a 16:9 screen. I also watch 4:3 content. Very rarely do I watch 2.35:1 on a laptop, and that would be the only time there would be black bars. Also, games. So I definitely think the notch would be extremely noticeable and annoying much of the time.

14": 3024 ÷ 1964 = 16:10.39

So it's quite a bit taller than 16:9, and the article points out that the area with the notch is not used in fullscreen applications.

Fair enough for widescreen content, but 4:3 content would still be affected. Not sure how it wouldn't use the notch. That suggests that it's not a real notch, but a false one created by the display, but why? What would be the point? And what, in fullscreen apps the camera just disappears?

Presumably, the pixels on the sides of the notch are kept black. So it's just like having a larger bezel. That's indeed what it looks like in the article.
