With the increased numbers of people working from home, many home-workers find themselves in need of a printer for their new home office. But which kind of printer should you get: inkjet or laser? This guide will help you make sense of the two main printer types so you can find a device to meet your professional needs.

I know that this isn't an extensive article but a printer today is much more than a printer. The biggest functionality in mine HP 4650 isn't even printing but copying documents/contracts to a multiple page pdf file. Having a tray for multiple documents for the scanner is then quite important.

A laser printer is a no brainier, go with laser. You can get a B&W laser printer for $30-$40 on a deal quite easily.

"If your work relies on printing color images and quality matters, or if initial cost is a concern and you don't print that many documents that often, an inkjet printer is probably the best choice for you. "

No it is not! The ink will dry so you are less likely to make full use of your cartridge. Go with laser, it'll last you 10 years if you don't use it much.

There is very little reason to go inkjet really.

The only thing I will note is that you should ventilate the room when using a laser printer as breathing it in is equivalent to 2nd hand smoking.

@LL - I suggest against that. You are just asking for more components to break down. Having them separately is much better as you can isolate failure.

Not to mention you need to be careful which printer you buy, some companies can be !@#$ and lock down your scanner if you are out of ink.

I find it important to mention the voices that warn about serious health problems resulting from laser printing. Although the available evidence is mixed, I think that it is an important aspect that should be considered when choosing a printer.
