EVGA SC15 (i7-7700HQ, GTX 1060) Laptop Review

The best GTX 1060 laptop.. almost. "Thin-and-light" without the "light". The SC15 is hefty but not bulky and fast but not noisy. It's close to being everything we're looking for in a premium gaming laptop under $2000 USD.

I want to point out that the frame is not actually aluminum.  The surface veneer is aluminum while the actual structural component is plastic.  You can see the brass nutserts where the chassis screws are.  This body is your typical thin aluminum wrap on ages-old plastic body.  These types of designs tend to wear badly over time if the laptops are actually moved around a lot or disassembled a few times due to the very limited strength of the brass nutserts that eventually loosen and rip out of the plastic.

[1.9Ghz CPU in Witcher?!]

I'm thinking there's a problem with this laptop - why on earth would the CPU run at 1.9Ghz during the Witcher 3 test!?  The game would load the CPU enough that it would want to run above 1.9Ghz - you'd think it would run at max turbo boost during gaming as long as temperatures were ok (which they were).  I'm thinking that the frame drops that you saw during Witcher 3 were due to the throttling of the CPU to 1.9Ghz - based on this I don't think this laptop is fit for purpose for a gaming laptop, unless the author can provide some more information based around why the CPU was at 1.9Ghz.  I really don't think the frame drops were caused by bloatware on the laptop, the 1.9Ghz CPU during Witcher 3 is the most surprising 'find'.

Because some of us want, or have to use laptops as our one and only computing device. We either don't have the luxury to have everything, or just prefer to have one main machine that is portable. Which requires it to be lightweight while still retaining power and long battery life.

Actually it's not an issue. The game's minimized and ideally (Unless it's an online game where things go on constantly or there's no autopause mechanism, it won't take up much CPU usage). That, and Witcher 3 is very well optimized, and actually not as CPU-intensive as you thought it was (It's far more GPU intensive than CPU). Since it's got 8 threads it actually has ample headroom. So much so that it can even turbo down when not needed.

Over 2k and a GTX1060? If it was a 1070 I would have had another look, but there is not much here to justify this price tag. Or is EVGA suddenly considering itself premium?

There is a common MSI's specs error for their gs63/73vr series: the HDMI output is 4k @ 60Hz definitely (the HDMI is linked with discrete, not integrated graphics), so it's HDMI 2.0 at least.
