Frank Azor drops a few hints about the XPS 15 9570 on Twitter

The upcoming iteration of the Dell XPS 15 will finally have full speed 4-lane Thunderbolt 3 along with possibly a 5K display option according to Dell's VP Gaming and XPS, Frank Azor, who also confirms that Dell is waiting for Intel to ship its 8th generation H-series processors.

This is so nice! I am so hyped for the next XPS 15 as I need a new laptop early next year! :D

One question - how long after CES 2018 in January until the 8th generation H-processors will release? And do you think this will set the release of the XPS 9570 to somewhere between january-march or later?

QC is not good on the XPS 15 - that needs to change at the targeted price and customer level
Sound quality needs to be heavily improved, Dolby processing suggested
Heat is still killing parts in the 15 from batteries to boards and needs to be better addressed
Consistency of cooling is dramatically variable from unit to unit - not a good end user experience
Screens need better contrast (others are able to achieve this) and rise/fall speed needs a boatload of attention (it is extremely poor on your claimed best screen)
HDMI out needs to be 2b standard not 1.4
DP out should be 1.4 not 1.2
Wifi and ethernet should be Intel standard at this level
Keyboard needs to be best in class for machines over 2k in value - currently it does not meet that standard

Are you really expecting to see a 5K display on a 15" laptop? Why? That would be an extremely poor design choice.

Don't you understand how HiDPI display scaling works on Windows? 200 % scaling is the best, as all the pixels are doubled. 3840 x 2160 is a perfect match for 15 inch display at crisp exact double of the Full HD display.

Going to 5120 pixels would mean either going to 250 % scale (the smudged UI would negate all the extra resolution benefits), or using a logical 2560 px desktop size, requiring you to pinch your eyes.

Also a 3200 px it wouldn't offer any extra benefit, just a bulky 15 inch machine with a desktop size of a 13 inch laptop.

I really can't believe Dell would be so stupid with their flagship series. In any case, the battery discharge rate would be insane on 5K with its 15M pixels (compared to 8M on 4K), so it's probably not going to happen. Fortunately.

instead of a model 3200x1800, I would prefer a thousand times a 2560x1440p 120hz, the 5K is too exaggerated, it is better to focus on improving the quality of the panel and not the number of pixels.

As for cpu and gpu, I hope some time use the new intel kaby lake -g or ice lake -g, so there would be more room for more battery or a better dissipation that you need so much.

I have to add, a 5K display would kill off the whole designer market, which I believe is one of the core target groups of the XPS series. It is a direct MacBook Pro competitor after all, blatantly so, down to its design.

The reason is that Adobe Creative Cloud apps do not support UI pixel scaling higher than 200%, and using a 15" 5K display would require to squint to extremely tiny pixels. Even the 4K at 200% is somewhat pushing the limits, but is still very usable.

Bottom line: there are basically just no benefits at all for a laptop to sport a 5K display right now.

120 Hz, no. Not going to happen. Dell has AlienWare brand for those. Besides gaming, I can't see any real benefit, and in gaming the laptop can't cope with the performance requirements of the 2560 @ 120 Hz, which is basically the same as running 4K @ 60 Hz, which is far beyond the capabilities of all but the bulkiest gaming laptops (think GTX 1080 Ti).

But a G-Sync pane , please.
