The infamous Wile E. Coyote crash test with a fake road painted on a wall across the real one was recently claimed to be a challenge for Tesla's self-driving system. A new test that pits HW3 vs HW4 Model Y demonstrates that the latest FSD hardware is much more advanced.

Tesla doesn't want to upgrade the older FSD computers. But they'll likely be forced to when more and more lawsuits hit about falsely advertising every car since 2016 containing the hardware needed for FSD. HW3 cars with model year 2024 don't have FSD V13 still, and may not without a hardware upgrade. Just imagine how fun it'll be when the same happens to all these facelift HW4 model Y's delivering when HW5 stars shipping later this year, repeating what happened to HW3 eventually.

Wile E Coyote

HW3 owner.... I do not want HW4.
Very content with what it does and how, especially after having a loaner HW4 in a model 3. After 2 days in it i could not wait to get back to a more reasonable experience.

Elon already announced that all HW3 users who paid for FSD will get free upgrade to HW4 eventually.

Mega What

Tesla does have a fundamental problem. How to better deal with obsoleting the very important FSD feature every 18-24 months or so.

Every HW update causes a new generation of upset car owners.

This article hasn't done their homework. So this Mark Rober road test is extremely flawed.  First, he isn't even using FSD.  Mark is using autopilot.  You can tell by looking at the screen.

On top of that, when he actually hits the wall in the Tesla, the autopilot, NOT FSD supervised turns off seconds prior to impact. Again, look at the screen in the Tesla.

Mark needs to redo this with the Tesla.  He needs to subscribe to FSD for a month and use that instead of autopilot.  Autopilot and FSD is two different softwares.

Why the hell do you care how expensive it'll be for Tesla if you aren't the one paying for it? O_o Tesla has ALREADY promised they will upgrade old car's FSD computers if they have to! And if HW4 isn't workable for unsupervised FSD either, so be it. Again, you won't be paying for the hardware upgrade, Tesla will! Tesla has already made more $ selling the $8000 FSD package than it would cost them to upgrade the computers. This is a total non-issue. 🤷 If cars need computer upgrades to do what was promised when you bought the FSD package, they will get them. And if you don't have to pay for that upgrade, why care about how much it costs Tesla to do? That's not your problem.
