Ripe for Strix Halo: The next version of the ThinkPad P14s AMD needs Ryzen AI Max

Lenovo's ThinkPad P14s with AMD CPU is still using Ryzen 8000, but we expect an update to Zen 5 soon. With the next model, Lenovo should use Strix Halo no matter what instead of the normal Strix Point chips, as the compact workstation urgently needs more GPU performance.

100% agree - a Thinkpad with AMD Strix Halo would be an instant buy for me. I've loved both my Thinkpad T and P models, but my current one is getting old, and I would love to upgrade to an AMD model with more GPU power. Make it happen, Lenovo.

I hope this product comes out soon but.... Lenovo please come up with the new LPCAMM2 memory and you already have one more buyer for this product. It is necessary that laptops start using the new memory that consumes less and performs better than the current ones.

If Strix Halo proves out, and they follow their usual pattern of offering a p14s with 64GB and great screen for a decent cost, it'll be a great option. However, if they offered upgradable memory of at least 128GB (or offered that config) it could be transformative, since it could then run larger LLMs, comparable to higher end Macs. A system with an NVidia chip would be faster, but limited by its VRAM.

If the appeal of Strix Halo is its efficiency, then I want to see it in 13" laptops, not 14" (Zephyrus G14 has already existed here)

Or even smaller, I'm really looking forward to GPD'd 10" Win Max with Strix Halo, even if limited

It's like Apple making efficient M series chips but then going up in screen-size to 14"/16" instead of going smaller. At least they get good battery with bright HDR display (miniLED/OLED).

I would love this chip in a 14" or even 16" chassis. I don't need top end GPU power, and the ability to assign massive memory to the iGPU (up to 96GB?) appeal to me for running compute and AI workloads on the chip. Mix that in with decent performance, no throttling when using a USB-C charger, and a portable-ish chassis, no faffing around with Nvidia Optimus and top tier Linux support out of the box, and it would be an dream workstation.

All of which seems more than possible with the Ryzen AI Max series.

A 14inch Thinkpad with Strix Halo would be great as a work laptop.

I already have my sight on HP Zbook Ultra 14 G1a as my next work laptop, and if there is a Thinkpad to choose from would be even better.

I used to prefer Thinkpads over HP's Pro laptops (I had both HP Elitebook and then Thinkpad P1 G6), but the last few years the Thinkpad's keyboards are getting worse and worse.

My P1 keeps missing keystrokes regularly, and it is clearly inferior than my previous HP Elitebook keyboard both in feeling and in missing keystrokes. So I am not sure if I will go for the Thinkpad if it comes out with Halo CPU. I'll wait for the (including keyboard) reviews first.

Maybe for the Thinkpad Z series.
For the classical thinkpads I'd prefer if they return to user replaceable/upgradeable models.

Agreed.

As both a AMD powered G14 owner and a discontinued Stealth owner I'd like to see this powering 13" options as well as 14" ones.

IMHO: having the ability to do normal work AND play games without a battery draining dGPU could/can be a game changer.

Make it happen Lenovo!!
