What am I meant to be looking for on those photos? It appears to be an 8GB variant according to the selection resistor and the D8CJN from Micron appears to be a 64Gb (8GB) DRAM module.

You would think for a senior person working for a big tech talk company could afford to take better pictures or even pictures that relate to the article. An 8gb raspberry pi instead of 16gb or at least a pic of the boards showing 16gb is coming? Wow.

The picture show a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB. The 16GB version will be released on 9 January and will not feature a resistor to mark the RAM. Instead of the resistor, the silk screen will read Raspberry Pi 5 16GB.

Or that they would know it's not the Foundation that designs the hardware, but Raspberry Pi Ltd, literally nothing to do with the Foundation.

The CM5 16GB variant is already in sale in sale in Hubtronics India Website. Here is the and model no. of it:

Model No.: CM5116016

I don't know it this is offical or not. But, Hubtronics is one of the known good electronic seller in India, so it might even be legit or Raspberry Pi may have already supplied the 16GB version to the resellers and not listed on the official website.

Some level of dumb here.
The photo shows an unmarked extra memory link that wasn't present on the release Pi 5.
