The Strix Point lineup introduced the most powerful iGPU to date, the AMD Radeon 890M. With RDNA 3.5 architecture and 16 CUs, it has what it takes to deliver discrete GPU-level performance, and as shown by a benchmark comparison video on YouTube, it can beat the desktop Nvidia GTX 1650 in many games.

The problem with that video is, that he doesn't tell us if he uses GDDR5 or GDDR6 on the gtx 1650. There is a huge difference between both, which is that the GDDR6 version can be up to 50% faster than the GDDR5 version.

But since we don't know which one he used...

It's pretty much the same unless the GDDR6 version has 100W TDP instead of 75W that is default and which was 890m compared to.

Does it matter tho? A APU is keeping up or beating a dedicated gpu.

"A APU is keeping up or beating a dedicated gpu... that is GENERATIONS-OLD."

Fixed! 😏

The point is that it is still being used.
Now that we have an apu that can effectively replace it, we can hopefully expect the bottom tier d-gpus to be at least 50% more powerful than the last generation.

The sad thing is that I see no SO-DIMM ddr5 memory support for any of the current generation processors (intel and and).

It's been just 3-4 years ago, why capitalize GENERATIONS-OLD.

I'd rather wait until Strix Halo is out. Nvidia GTX 1650 is old news by now. They should target something like GTX 4050 at least.

*sigh*

One of my favorite Laptops has a GTX1650m installed in it.

And while YES the entire system gets rather warm when pushed (I make use of a FAN tray for it to sit on which then sits on my lap) it *IS ABLE TO* play a large assortment of games at higher settings then the AMD 7xxM is able to.

YES the GTX1650 is rather 'aged' in 2024. Nvidia's best modern replacement is the RTX4050 which (IMHO) is a fairly capable "low end dGPU".

Just think, just 10yrs ago (2014) you needed a dGPU to even think about gaming beyond old vintage 1980's "DOS" games. (an era where 720P was 'very high resolution')

I still have multiple laptops in service that have GTX1xxx series dGPU's installed in them.

No, none of them are are very 'speedy' however with the right games and settings can still in 2024 offer a GREAT gaming experience!

I don't understand the point of saying the newest and greatest igpu performs better than the lowest end 6 year old dgpu.

No you didn't, it was just not as popular. With the rise of dGPUs gamedevs stopped optimizing their s***, that's for sure, but World of Warcraft or War Thunder or World of Tanks ran in 2014-2018 on Intel HD Graphics and Iris iGPUs. Games that required audience were working hard on optimization and were running on all kinds of lower-end hw.
