A recent leak suggests that AMD will refresh its AM4 platform with new gaming-oriented X3D CPUs. Namely, a Ryzen 5 5500X3D has been mentioned in official EEC documentation. The CPU would purportedly have six cores, 12 threads, and 96 MB of L3 cache and be optimised for gaming.

Seriously?

How many folks are desperate for a whole whooping %10-15 improvement that they are going to shell out $200-300 for a new CPU?

(keep in mind that +%15 of 60FPS = 69FPS, +%15 of 90FPS = 104FPS. A whole WHOOPING 9-14FPS improvement for HOW MUCH $$$!?!?!?!?!)

Still a lot of am4 boards sitting in stock that still need to be sold would be my guess.

If you're already on am4 and your pc's mainbord supports this cpu this probably won't be much of an upgrade.

Brand new label is there to mislead the tech ignorant customers trying to get their kids a new computer.
They're still selling 4000, 5000, 6000, series of laptop processors under 7000 label for 'reduced' price to trick customers.

4000 would give you zen 2, they also have chips without smt. And the vega core count per chip is less than the previous generation though it is indeed faster.

5000 series would give zen 3, but the same vega chip.

6000 series would give zen 3 and rdna 2.

And all these chips have some vulnerability that was addressed with Zen 4.

But 7000 series contains all these + zen 4, which is limited to 7xx4x u/h.
The same goes for 8000 series.

Now we have ryzen AI series, so at least you know you're buying the latest chip with that (though you'd be sacrificing upgradeable ram if you go for it now).

So yea. Reintroduction of old chips as 'new' ones is meant to trick the poor ignorant customer, not for people actually looking for an upgrade and actually know something about it.

AMD, intel, NVIDIA, Apple, Snapdragon , all of them have done such things before.
So it's not even surprising.
But as someone already mentioned, they probably need to get rid of all those extra motherboards and the chips they already have in stock.

So what things exactly did Apple and Snapdragon do.
