Lenovo wants to please fans on both sides of the fence by offering Intel and AMD versions of the ThinkPad E14 Gen 5. We check out both the Core i7-1355U and Ryzen 7 7730U configurations to see which is the better buy.

here is the outcome. two years old amd processors are still far ahead to intel's current generation and more than capable than almost very user want at these bargain prices. just look at performance figures: 970 vs 1750. it 70% more! similar igpu, better battery life, better display at lower prices than intel. we all would like last-gen phoenix 7040 cpu's but fabrication capacities made them premium products, so at these lower prices, the of perfromance amd offers is really a gem.

Ok, I'll admit that having TB4 could be a valuable feature.

However IMHO almost 2X run time on battery is a deal maker!!

Again IMHO when it comes to portable use, usable run time is a key factor and in 2023 I'd EXPECT >=9 hours of web surfing or media consumption.

Even my 2013 13" MBP can run on battery for far longer than the Intel version of this device (AND it is 10yrs OLD!!).

Intel:

  • AMD only comes with 8 GB soldered, Intel with both 8 and 16.
  • Intel has TB4.
  • Intel Ethernet Connection I219-V in the Intel model is a bit better than Realtek RTL8111H-CG in the AMD. Not really relevant for WiFi-only users...
  • ...but Intel AX201 in the Intel variant is better than Realtek RTL8852BE in the AMD variant for WiFi (lower latency primarily and overall better network stability).
  • Intel has HDMI 2.1, AMD HDMI 1.4b.
  • Intel has quite stronger CPU options (i5 1340P, i7 1360P, i5 13500H, i7 13700H) to choose where the R7 7730U can't really compete (including with this i7 1355U in sustained loads, then you add an eGPU via TB4 and... ggwp AMD) - and also a dGPU option.
  • Intel has better Linux support.

AMD:

  • AMD uses M.2 2280 (and M.2 2242) vs only M.2 2242 with Intel. Major downside of the Intel E14 G5!
  • AMD has significantly better battery.

Intel all day.

Edit: Btw, holly hell, the laptop is looking gorgeous! It's like a mini P1 + Z13 + older design language from the X1C6 to the X1C8 models, all put together. Wonderful looking machine, especially for an E series member!
