Meanwhile, Tesla and Chinese brands continue to conquer more and more international sales, making traditional brands more and more irrelevant all around the globe... and crying to daddy government to bail them out, to give them more subsidies, and to put restrictions to imports.

The reality is neither, currently.  People currently want Hybrids, which give them best of both worlds.  And more affordable cars, which BYD seems to be the only manufacturer that is listening to the latter.

Hybrids = best things of both worlds + worst things of both worlds, but I do understand that battery tech is still not 100% there for everyone (cheap +800 Km battery life).

Also BYD is Chinese, so... Yup, they're getting real big real fast (even Toyota has started using BYD hybrid tech).

There is, of course, also a massive difference between PHEVs and traditional hybrids, so the distinction must be made.
