HP Spectre x360 13 with Sure View - What a way to ruin a great laptop

HP has done a great job with the Spectre x360 13, but give the 1080p Sure View display a wide berth. With poor viewing angles and image quality even with Sure View switched off, we cannot fathom why HP does not offer a regular 1080p display in the UK.

Great article. True story: my team at work was standardized on the x360s then this 'feature' became standard. We got one laptop with it, and that was all - we switched off HP. One of the most unusable laptop features I've ever seen, it should really be described as a bug.

The 4K panel looks awesome but drains so much battery.
Remember when they claimed to have 22hrs battery life on this generation? Reviewers with 1080p version can easily pass 15hrs doing web browsing, but my 4K version only does 6hrs. And this is after all kinds of tweaks like replacing thermal paste with liquid metal, undervolting, limiting clocks, disabling useless services/apps...
Also the stylus needs an insane amount of force to activate (about twice comparing to surface book 1, so much higher than my normal writing), and it's uneven across the screen, resulting dotted lines/writings. HP support considers this to be a feature with Tilt Pen so... good luck I guess.

Yep

So you're reviewing a laptop which includes the Sureview privacy screen feature and then complaining people can't view it from a side angle?!

THAT'S THE POINT!!!  The privacy screen feature is there to stop people viewing it from the side, such as on a plane or train.

Unfortunately, the overarching point has been missed here.

If you want a 1080p panel, which has significantly better battery life than any 4K panel, then a Sure View screen is the only option on the Spectre x360 13 in some markets, like the UK.

Sure View also compromises image quality with the feature disabled and even when looking directly at the display.

Sure View has its benefits, some of them unintended.

However, to only offer Sure View panels unless you buy a 4K display on what is regularly compared to the XPS 13 9300 is short-sighted.

Has anyone an idea whether the privacy guard displays used by Lenovo behave diferently or not? Are tests of privacy guard displays from Lenovo planed in the next weeks?

Are you going to review the 2020 HP Spectre 15" ? I've heard that the AMOLED display on it has horrendous PWM flicker - would like for someone on NotebookCheck to verify that

I had the misfortune of buying a Spectre with this privacy filter. It's a piece of garbage, completely useless. What adds insult to injury is that this filter is not effective. You def. couldn't get away with watching adult content with someone next to you on the bus. Avoid such laptops at all cost. I am so mad that I will NEVER buy a HP computer. I am furious! >:( >:( >:(

HI there

I was using also one of these with this Terrible Sure View tech. Where to find the list of SKUs which DONT have this feature ? 1080p screens only.
