The much-awaited Asus ROG Ally X has been fully unveiled. As the company previously announced, this is more of a refresh to the non-X variant, and it comes with some key improvements, including a higher amount of RAM, more storage, a larger battery, and some refinements to the design. It costs $799, and the preorder for the new gaming handheld starts today.

No matter the *marketing* shenanigans, on either end - AMD or ASUS, nothing... I mean... absolutely  NOTHING... justifies a handheld device ranging ~$1000!!!

What are these folks smoking, yo! 👎

Comeback to Earth, AMD / ASUS... FAST!

Falsehood is here

Agreed. Requires volume+s/w ecosystem subsidization though, to bring down prices to ~$400 range, which very few companies are capable of doing both well.

I think what Asus has realised is that they can't really compete on either front vs valve & Nintendo, so they're now trying to push to the more premium sector of handhelds.

If they can't sell in volume, might aswell sell to the few niche market with decent margins, amirite?

Especially, moreso that they know other bigger players (Sony & MS) are watching this space closely. If they were to release a portable system, AMD would offer them the superior more custom silicon over Asus. And then they'd have no chance.

Hence for Asus, this is more just trying to capitalise on this short window of opportunity until the bigger players arrive with more polished systems and better user experience.

More Wh in the battery? Cool - it was needed!

For those that are inexperienced in how the market generally plays out, here's a few reminders and hints.

Back in the day, "Palm" made a killing and invented the 'Personal Data Assistant' market. Many/most of their devices were <$200 until Microsoft and a army of OEM's jumped into the market. Soon HP and others were trying to sell >$1000 "PDA's".

Then the "smart phone" was invented and rendered the PDA obsolete.

Least anyone forget that the ACTUAL COST of "Smart Phones" from the major OEM's push >$1000+ price tags these days.

While I'd agree that the "sweet spot" for handheld gaming is <=$300-400 and few (if ANY) of the current "handheld gaming PC" OEM's can really reach that price point what we are left with is ~$1000 'handhelds' with VERY limited market. (after all for a killobuck you can get a MUCH BETTER performing last generation Laptop!!!)

So as Nintendo and Steam Deck have shown that there IS a market for handheld gaming devices, we get to watch the major OEM's try and FAIL at making money in this market. :)

I for one pays attention to details and would rather go in for a laptop, seeing those have bigger screens. If I were rich then might get it along side the laptop.

How could you consider this or any asus product new after their fraudulent warranty process, and how poorly they treat their paying customers
