Tesla removes all but Hold regenerative braking option to maximize range in light of new EPA test

The EPA now tests all EV ranges in extreme ride height or acceleration modes which resulted in a Model Y range estimate cut. All Tesla Model Y and Model 3 units produced after January 1, 2024, will have only one stopping mode, too, in order to make range estimates more accurate.

Averaging all settings? That's a very poor decision from the EPA. Just review the default setting.

Speaking from experience, the Model X definitely had/has? Hold, Creep, and Roll, and the Model S had/has? Creep and Roll

The formulas for estimating range are by and large opaque and arbitrary. A better approach would be to provide both a speed and distance chart AND a speed and kilowatt-hour consumption chart for every vehicle showing how far the vehicle can travel and how much energy it consumes at any given speed. Options (like larger wheels) that materially affect efficiency can be displayed as an additional curve on the charts.

Also important would be showing an efficiency curve for COLD WEATHER, so consumers can get a good sense of how temperature impacts range or efficiency. In the same way we have been showing city/highway fuel economy figures on window stickers, EVs could show summer/winter range numbers on their window stickers.

They don't have the budget to test every factor of choice. But EPA does have highway and city mpg, instead of just a combined range, they can show both a city range and highway range as well. A person can calculate this manually, but most won't even know where to start

Why only for EVs? Why not for all cars since ICE suffer from range loss too during summer and winter. Though then comes the question of if it should be done from "cold start" or "warm start"

The regenerative braking is in my top 10 favorite features of our 23 Model Y. Its a little touchy at the beginning, cause if you move your foot off the gas abruptly, it kinda break checks you. I only did it once when we first got it, but once you learn to use it, its soooooo helpful, especially in traffic!!

Living in Florida, there are so many more things i would change about it as well. I wish they would do testing on Tesla's here in Central Florida. Possibly with the police, sheriffs dept, highway patrol, citizens patrol, government officials. Normal people who drive back and forth to work everyday. It can help with things the vehicle may be lacking, normal wear and tear, outside sources, battery life and most of all increasing the GPS information. It is absolutely the worst ever!

Are brake lights required for regenerative braking? Without brake lights activated when removing one's foot from the gas pedal, it seems there is an increased risk for rear end collisions.

The brake lights come on when u take your foot off
