Teslas were designed with 15 extra miles of range on an empty battery readout

Just as storied EV tester Bjorn Nyland demonstrated, a Tesla EV can travel further even after the battery charge readout shows zero. What he didn't know at the time, however, was that Teslas may have been designed like that in an elaborate range estimate scheme.

ICE cars do that as well. Just to make sure you do not clog up or burn up the fuel pump. Toyotas will throw an error code if you run it dry and even try to start after filling up with fuel. Then you either need to tow to the dealership of reset the code.
Granted Teslas most likely do this for nefarious reasons there is an argument to be made: batteries do not like to be over-discharged. Leaving a battery over-discharged for a long time will lead to premature degradation.

While it is true that batteries don't like being over discharged or too fully charged. All lithium ion batteries have unacceptable capacity, there is nothing nefarious about that. Going too low isn't going to degrade your battery, it will brick it
