Asus ROG Strix GL703GM Scar Edition (8750H, GTX 1060, FHD 120 Hz) Laptop Review

Cooler, faster, better. The mid-2018 edition of the Strix GL703 Scar Edition comes with hexa-core Coffee Lake-H i7 processor, same Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics and a significantly redesigned cooling system. The changes are largely positive.

Newegg has a GL703GM-NS73.  It looks from the specs that the only difference is a 128GB SSD vs a 256GB SSD in the GL703GM-DS74.  Any idea if this is this the only difference between those two models?  Want to make sure I get one with the updated cooling.

I own this machine for some time now and I just wanted to point out how accurate this article is.
-the fans are loud under heavy load;
-battery life is poor. It even drains battery while playing Destiny 2 sometimes;
-the price is a bit over the top;
-it heats up while playing heavy games.
That being said the 120 Hz display is something I've experienced before and I like it. Visibility angles are not great, but I can live with it.
Bottom line is - I am happy with it :)

I've finally gotten this laptop (GL703GM to work properly)

Cinebench R15 multicore score 1250-70 every run on overboost fan profile)
CineBench R20 multicore score 3103
liquid metal on cpu (not gpu)
custom laptopstand with two fans.
max temps on cinebench R20 ~ 88 when cpu is using 73wattage of power (power limits removed with throttlestop)
Unlocked bios with memory overclocking and possibility to disable HyperThreading and C-States and 100 more options.
Temps in lightweight gaming (60~, csgo, old titles)
Newer titles with high gpu usage ~ around 75~
stock memory (Hynix ddr4 2666mhz cl19 overclocked  to 2933mhz cl16, stable)

This is a GOOD laptop with many problems and you need a professional to take care of those and you need to be patient and UNINSTALL ALL THE ASUS GARBAGE that they have pre-installed to your windows.. and after you uninstall those they still leave their registry markings etc behind.. asus is starting to get very sloppy... but i'm satistied, but this is going to be my last asus laptop since they just can't put us users to do the testing... they need to step up or lose many many more customers to msi etc...

This comment is irrelevant based on the laptop age now, since it's a bit outdated... But if anyone is buying a second hand one or looking for a cheap laptop now, I've had this laptop for over 4 years now and it's never missed a beat.

The model I purchased had the i7-8750h, GTX1060 6GB, 256 Samsung NVME SSD, Seagate 1TB SSHD, and 16GB of DDR4 RAM.

For 3 of those years it was used every single day for video editing, Emulation and recording purposes which can be quite an intense workload. Still to this day I've never had an issue with it with regular maintenance (removing back case and blowing out the fans, basically).

The GL703GM has always run fine whatever was thrown at it, but I have done a couple of upgrades regardless just for 'future proofing'. I installed an extra 16GB of Crucial DDR4 RAM which is probably overkill, and am about to replace both storage modules for more speed and capacity. The NVME SSD will be replaced with a 1TB Samsung 980 SSD, and the SSHD will be replaced with a 2TB Sata SSD. The difference in SSHD and SSD speed is huge so editing even from the D:/ drive will be hugely improved!

3TB is also probably overkill for me, but it gives me the option to install all programs to the SSD, as well as a few games that can have MASSIVE load times (Such as Final Fantasy 15, which had over 4 minute load times from the original SSHD, but 20 seconds from the original SSD.) There will be no issue with read speeds on multiple tracks for video editing I'm sure from the Sata SSD upgrade alone!

Very much recommended, though these days only for a for a mid range laptop for workloads and some gaming!
