An article (https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-refutes-claim-that-newly-uncovered-Spectre-vulnerability-variants-need-patching-with-performance-leeching-fixes.537374.0.html) posted just under a year ago stated that Intel was also using LFENCE, and of course claiming patches wouldn't result in performance drops. Shocker that turned out not to be true. I've said before, this is why I take any performance lead Intel has over AMD with a grain of salt, and subtract at least 10% from it, since that's where it will be after a couple years of patching all the holes they left in it worrying about performance and not security. And now with Alder Lake they're getting the performance to retake the lead simply by cranking up the wattage vs making the chips better*. So AMD is more efficient, faster at a given wattage, and more secure with even better performance after a couple years compared to Intel. *Yes, I realize they *are* better, but not as much as they seem at first glance due to the amount of performance gain that comes from increasing the wattage.
