I understand the need for a processor bump... Samsung released their flagship tablets then Apple released their mid range iPad Air with the A14 blowing it away performance wise. Throw in Samsungs penchant for 16:10 aspect and you ended up with the $599 air being compared to the $999 S7+... and the S7+ really didn't bring anything to the table to make that comparison all that favorable. The new iPad air pros will be coming in a couple months which will only make the samsungs look more dated.
That said, I don't think a mere processor bump will be enough and they will still need to aggressively price like they did before Christmas if they want to move product.
Pesonally I hate apple and have a Galaxy Tab S4. I was looking forward to the S7+ for its larger 120hz amoled. But the new air screen is just as wide with newer / faster hardware and a more extensive pro app selection... for hundreds less. As I said, I hate apple so if the air kept me from buying an S7+ you can bet its stopped others.
Exactly. While a processor upgrade may have been "needed" to match it up spec-wise with the competition, it was actually needed and keeping the price where it is will mean it won't matter. They need to lower the price substantially to compete, not do a meaningless upgrade and keep the price the same. A tablet shouldn't cost as much as a laptop with a full-fledged OS.
I hate Apple as well--though I hate Google and MS, too, and greatly dislike Samsung, so it's more degrees of hatred--and even I have considered going with an iPhone before. There were many reasons for me not to, and they all weighed in on my decision, but the only thing that
really stopped me is the lack of customization and abilities compared to Android. Most people are not at all like me in these respects. Most people either don't have a preference or even
like or
love Apple, and most people use their phones and tablets for very basic stuff like web browsing with a few tabs open, calling/texting, and social media. In other words, most people a) don't need or even care about the super-duper latest and greatest processor, b) can do what they need equally well on an Apple or Android device, and c) are going to prefer the one that's cheaper, not to mention known for better long-term support.
Samsung has let their phone and tablet prices get out of hand and their top-tier stuff just doesn't have the same value as many others. Even their mid-tier is frankly too much for what it is. Of course, lots of people will still buy it, just like lots of people rush to buy the latest iDevice just because it's Apple and it's new, but they really need to step up their game to compete against Apple, not to mention all the Chinese brands that are growing every year.
That said, every Samsung device I've owned or used has had incredibly stupid design decisions, combining great hardware with terribly designed software and firmware, so I won't buy another one of their products unless there's nothing else remotely close. So I don't really care what they do as far as hardware upgrades or pricing except for offering more competition.
