Report: Notebookcheck ratings v7 update launched

The development of laptops, smartphones and tablets continues at a steady, albeit now slightly slower, pace. We last updated our review metrics in Fall 2016, so enough time has now passed to revise these once again. From now on, we will be switching to an adjusted set of weightings, which is the seventh revision since we started Notebookcheck well over a decade ago. Read on to find out what changes v7 brings.

Notebookcheck still gives the most reliable product reviews. Comprehensive is indeed the word to describe their reviews. The most recent review is a case in point (Samsung Galaxy Note 10). I particularly like the fact that wired connectivity is taken into account in the connectivity section.

My only gripe is that it is never stated whether the battery is replaceable or non-replaceable. I know they never are, but still.  I'm interested in how repairable a device is because this is important for me so that I can get bang for my buck. I would love to see a dedicated section for this on top of everything else. This is nit-picking though.

I really wish you would re-evaluate your thermal weighting system. The issue of thermals not catching up has little to do with GPUs and CPUs getting more powerful, that is due to die shrinks. So unless the CPU power consumption increased, there is little reason for heat to increase other than poor thermal designs to begin with. Yes, the issue is due to them shrinking the size of laptops to make them thinner!

Which isn't bad in itself (I want lighter laptops too), but if your thermal systems aren't catching up and you have to draw the bar!

High temperatures of laptops means you are less likely to get stable performance, and components are more likely to fail, especially LION batteries which are harmed significantly by heat! And we know thermals are going to get worse over time as fans become weaker and dust blocks air intake over time.

Thus thermal ratings should have a much larger impact on the score of a laptop! Please hold these manufacturers accountable because most review sites don't even cover thermals, and just let these companies slip by with their poor cooling solutions.

Please put more focus on what sets you apart!

I agree with A.
My mom told me that someone she knew fell asleep with the laptop on his lap and woke up to find it had burnt his knees.
Some people just say: "Powerful laptops are not meant to be used on your lap!", but for me not being able to use it that way is a major disadvantage and it could also be a danger for uninformed people (like that guy above).
So l think that the temperature should be given some more attention as it influences the usefulness and safety of the machine.
