Expect to see more mismatches of 4K IPS panels on cheap budget laptops

We've already posted a few articles about Chuwi's LapBook plus, a $439 USD budget laptop that distinguishes itself with a 15.6-inch 4K HDR 100% SRGB display and unibody metal build. There's a reason why Chinese budget laptops are able to have high-spec panels in them suddenly, however, and it's related to OLED and Chinese subsidies.

We're in an interesting time for display technology. IPS screen's are getting insanely cheap, and most flagships seem to be jumping onto OLED despite the technology still having some kinks to work out.
This feels similar to the transition from mechanical HDDs to SSDs. When they first came out, SSDs were expensive and had a myriad of issues with reliability and heat management, but they're now the standard. It'll be interesting to see what laptop displays look like in 3 years.

In the meantime, I'm still waiting on someone to make a competent e Ink panel with a decent refresh rate.

This is the sort of development that I feel will create a very backward situation. Established name brands won't be quick to jump on the panel sales. It will be smaller, more flexible manufacturers--the budget laptop types--who would flock to add this feature.

This could be a window of opportunity for one of those smaller manufacturers to upstage the others with a quality laptop with normally expensive screen, at a lower price.
