ALERT !

I have just bought this Lenovo S440, 14" with i3-4100U, 128GB SSD and 8GB RAM. The machine is nice, a bit heavy, and so-so display.

Your review says its got two antennas, well it may have two antennas, but the Wi-Fi reception is very poor - I cannot use it in another room than the antenna. This is only for connecting with Wi-Fi in the same room.

So whats an Utrabook if it cant connect with Wi-Fi ?  .... nothing, so I´m now wondering what to use this machine for, it was intented for business traveling, but if it cant connect ?  - I red that the Lenovo U-series Ultrabooks have antenna problems, it seems like all Lenovo Ultrabooks have antenna problems ..

SO STAY CLEAR OF LENOVO ULTRABOOKS !    :(

s440's many module, equip are good, but, wireless is very very bad. i had installed windows7,8 8 times...for more wireless speed. and now i forgive...

This answer concerns Lenovo's wifi issues.
I myself owned a U410 touch which is equipped with Qualcomm Atheros..., not intel Centrino. I 've seen people complaining about the wifi on the U series models EQUIPPED WITH INTEL CENTRINO, which is also equipped in this S440 THINKPAD.
The answer is clear, intel's wifi card is corrupted. Intel surprised me on how poor their product canbe, and Lenovo is also blameworthy on the matter that they don't test or do the QC before embedded this receptor in their laptops.
It's just so disappointing to see the legendary Thinkpad suffer.

I heard some issue on Wifi reception-- advise urgently please..

I got this in November 2013, and can now concluded this computer is trash - dont buy it.

1) It comes with a hybrid HDD, which stalls the computer at boot, so you have to force shutdown almost every time.

2) The display is fuzzy, too low brightness, zero viewing angle..

3) Problems with touch, to close a windows often need several attempts.

4) Comes with Windows 8, which is a seperate problem, but never the less, windows close by them self, windows pops up - Windows 8 is not for notebooks, Windows 8 is for tablets with no keyboard or mouse.

5) Build-in security chip prevents to install, or make it almost impossible, to install a new OS. I have ordered Windows 7 Prof discs from Lenovo, only cost is the cost of shipment, good service, but havnt got the time to try install Windows 7 - my wife now got it anyway.

6) WiFi antenna is very weak, connections drops frequently due to the weak antenna. You need an external antenna atached to make sure you have a steady signal.


7) Compared with the competition, its a bit heavy.

But apart from above, back lit keys with two levels, nice design are the only features which can be said positivley about this S440, but does not at all compensate for the numerous of problems, unfortunately.

I have the S440 as a work laptop, and whilst I miss the screen size/resolution of my older W530, and also the docking station capability, the item that really annoys me is the touchpad. It's the worst ever. What was wrong with the old style separated buttons. Te reasons are, (1) the touchpad has the left and right buttons marked at the top, but if the touchpad is activated rather than the trackpoint, the right button is the BOTTOM of the touchpad, NOT where the button is marked, and (2) cursor movement can still happen when you go to press a button, often causing you to click on something else! There is no way to configure the touchpad to prevent this. WHY!!

It's very simple Lenovo, enable a STANDARD touchpad configuration whereby the buttons are where they're marked and clicking on a button does NOT move the cursor.

I would also like to be able to switch OFF the touchscreen, as with large hands, stray and unintentional touches often happen when typing. I therefore cannot normally wait to connect an external keyboard and mouse.

Got this 4 years ago. Can agree that the touchpad is very very poor. Something the review sort-of glossed over. Left screen hinge broke after about a year of use, which I replaced successfully. The laptop eventually completely failed to boot after about 3.5 years, which wasn't impressive compared to other laptops I've used or owned.
