Hands-on Toshiba Satellite P70 Pre-production Notebook

Aluminum bullet. Toshiba's Satellite P70 series is equipped with the brand new Haswell processor and Nvidia graphics card. We were given a first look at the pre-production model. Our review reveals whether the notebook knows how to please or not.

Where is a version with an HQ part? Why do we want to buy a non-gaming Haswell  laptop with a dGPU? Weird.

The HQ parts are probably not available yet. According to earlier rumors its set for Q3 introduction.

Notebookcheck: "we measure very high temperatures of 53.5 and 60.5o C. The air blown out of the case is rather hot and therefore it is not advisable to keep your hand next to the opening. The powerful hardware is the cause of these temperatures."

Other reviewers are noting Haswell laptops are running very dangerously hot and they must have good cooling or fans will be running high and noisy. 

The recent NBcheck review of Acer Aspire V3-772G noted it just about hit 99C during test and it is another example of dangerous hot temperature from Haswell CPUs.

Been running this unit for almost a year now, as at 3/11/2014 and I've found it robust, and very friendly with the well spaced keys.  Toshiba support has been moderate at best (here in New Zealand) when I wanted a full user manual.  But I like it, a lot, and the ample space with two hard drives is great.

For around NZ$2400 I'm real happy with it, though having to come to terms with Win 8 and upgrading to 8.1.1 has been a learning curve.

I can't really comment on the battery life as I seldom use it on battery alone - basically its been a space-saver for me given that I'd prefer a full size desktop monitor for gaming.  But I've become accustomed to this screen area which is a vast improvement on my previous 15.6" units.

The so-called noisy drive/s are hardly a bother.  The sounds from the speakers are just fine if I watch and listen to a YouTube vid.  But on the few occasions I watch and listen to something more important, only earphones will do the trick.

Overall, I reckon its a 9/10 compared to my previous two Asus units, which I would've graded an 8/10 and a 7/10.
