Thanks to a massive battery, a solar power system in Abu Dhabi can now consistently produce as much energy as a nuclear power plant. The power plant might benefit from unique local conditions, but not necessarily from a financial perspective.

Your guess on the cost of the project is low by at least a factor of 4.

DOE says installed cost for PV at grid scale is still above $1/W. www.energy.gov/eere/solar/solar-photovoltaic-system-cost-benchmarks

Battery costs of $60/kWh is factory for for raw cells. We're getting bids above $240/kWh for packaged, delivered, installed modules.

Plug these in instead and project costs are at least $10.2B before financing costs.

This jives with numbers given by Jigar Shah of the US Loan Programs office. In an interview, he indicated that if nuclear gets Nth of a kind back down to $12000/kW, that beats competing firm technologies.

You're forgetting one simple thing. In Middle East monarchies, labor is, ahem, shockingly cheap! One could even say it's free!

Who cares about costs when a large scale solar project takes 2-4years to build compared to Nuclear taking 8-20years.

One will be full amortized and taking in positive cashflow where the other may not even be built.
