forming an LLC

I'm in the early stages of forming an LLC and keep hearing about the importance of an Operating Agreement. I thought these agreements were mainly for formalities in larger companies, but it sounds like they play a significant role even for small LLCs. Could someone explain what exactly goes into an Operating Agreement and why it's so essential for an LLC, even if it's just a single-member one?
