Logitech has seemingly killed its 'forever mouse' project which had sparked widespread controversy by suggesting users pay a regular fee to get some kind of updates for their mice, required for said mice to remain usable. The Swiss company now claims via a statement that it never seriously considered releasing such a product; that it was merely an internal exploration of future possibilities.

Shame on them!!! I've bought and used in the last years up to three different anywhere mx —the 2, and a couple of 2s—, and all of them got after a couple or three years of use the phantom doble click problem due to their sh***y Osrom switches. Everybody knows it. Internet is full of pages dedicated to try to solve it. And know Logitech come up with this. Shame on them!! I would never again buy them a mouse. As a matter of fact, after my last disappointment I've got myself a Chinese copy for less than half, which, by the way, works even better: quieter, and with longer battery run times.

Why ? Did you really want a "Mouse as a service" ?
What's next, life as a service ? you don't pay, you die ?

Wake up, the "everything as a service" is a giant scam that leads to the end of private property.
Look at some videos of Louis Rossmann on Youtube to understand what's going on, and why the "xx as a service" must be stopped.

Did you even read the rest of their comment? They're shaming Logitech for attempting this. Learn how to read.

The very first comment is all about planned obsolescence, I believe. As in, designing products in such a way as to prevent them from lasting for more than a couple of years. Some companies do that indeed and it's not limited the tech world, either.

"you don't pay, you die" - this is precisely how the world works. No money = no way to pay for housing and food = imminent death.

I always prefer keyboard and mouse with hot swappable switches so they keep running even if there is failure , just swap that switch or replace with a non essential key temporarily.

Keyboard example: keychron

Mouse example: Kreo Chimera RGB USB Wireless Gaming Mouse with Hot-swappable Switches, Asus

Yet you've bought three of them just to be sure.

Get ASUS ROG Gladius or Chakram, they have hotswappable everything.
Razer Basilisk V3, Logi G502x - optical a.k.a. "will probably last forever" everything.
Logi Mx Master 3s - golden standard of productivity mice, they have different kind of switches, rubber coating will give in faster than those, don't get white one if you don't wash your hands.
