BoostR eGPU dock rivals OneXGPU and GPD G1 with very affordable initial pricing

The new company BoostR has brought out its very first product, an eGPU dock. It rivals the OneXGPU, featuring an AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT, one OCuLink port, and one USB4 port. The early bird price for the external graphics card is $499, which is a lot lower than what the competitors go for.

Have a laptop or other device with a low-end iGPU or low-mid range dGPU?

While you'll be stuck with the above when on the go or out in the wild, however with this device you can 'dock' to a boost of GPU power *IF* you at least have a USB4 or Oculink port!

IDK how much (if any) "docking stations" have caught on for home users/consumers but many professionals use them in the office.

This is a great start, the OneXGPU is ridiculously overpriced for a 7600xt mobile GPU. This one is a little more down to earth. For contrast, for $750 you can put together an eGPU that can do either Oculink or USB 4/Thunderbolt (but not both) with a 7900GRE. It won't be as portable, but for the intended use, I don't really care about it being super portable, the Radeon 780m iGPU that is in most current Oculink devices is still capable of gaming in a pinch one on the road.

I don't really see a use case for gaming on the road with an external monitor, if I'm not at home I am going to want to play on the monitor built into my device and if I'm at home I don't really care if my eGPU is the size of a Razor Core X and doesn't fit in a laptop bag.

I still think these need to come down to around $300 to catch on at this performance level. Also, you can buy a laptop with a 4060 or even a 4070 built in for less dough than one of these plus a laptop.

Portable egpus are admittedly quite a niche use case. I take a mix of short and longer trips abroad quite frequently. For the short trips, I would love a portable egpu solution as I usually leave the laptop behind and just pack my Legion Go and an ipad mini. But at current pricing, I'm not tempted, they would need to come down significantly. I have an empty Aorus gaming box, and for €400, I can put a Palit 4060ti in there which is significantly better than 7600M XT. But of course it isn't quite as portable...
