Another way to increase range: A hobbyist has equipped his Tesla with a solar roof, which can be folded up and does not have to be completely removed whilst driving. The increase in range is quite respectable.

If you look at the improvement of solar cell tech over time - a system like this could be shrunk down to 2 panels that are part of the roof and the price cut to $1k or $2k. 20 to 30 miles a day is fine for a large % of EV drivers. But with all breakthroughs, somebody has to start selling it and there will be enough niche buyers if it makes sense

Improvements in photovoltaic technology have arguably been less impressive than that of battery cell technology in the last half century, only really losing out to Fusion for the title of "least rapidly developed technology still in development".

The absolute, cutting edge Perovskite cells - which are still proving impossible to manufacture in a reliable format at an affordable price, despite research into them going on for decades - are only tauted to take the efficiency up to around 27-28%, up from the approximately 21-24% that commercially available cells currently achieve.

A 350% increase in efficiency is simply impossible, as that would require the cells to be more than 100% efficient.

Flexible solar panels could just do the job & even less weight & thickness when folded..Portable solar panels is certainly going to be hot selling as owners can address range anxiety to certain extend and pay less for electricity from the grid. Having the capacity to charge 20%-30% is more than enough for travelling extra miles seeking charging stations at peak time when charges are occupied. This reduces anxiety of driving EVs.

It's actually borderline genius for other reasons. That helps protect the paint from sun damage AND keeps the car cooler, making it less necessary to use as much AC.

Let's say $3.50 per gallon. Average car of that class get 30 mpg. Getting 20 "free" miles per day is worth roughly $2.75. Let's say 250 good days for solar. That's almost $700 a year.

6 years to get back the investment? Not maybe a good economic argument, but then again, you also can charge your car even in emergency situations (no power) when most gas stations also wouldn't be operating. Let it charge about a week and be able to go almost 150 miles in a car rather than 0 miles in an ICE vehicle or 150 miles on foot? That is a good deal.
