HP cites threat of viruses from non-HP printer cartridges to justify blocking their use, experts sceptical

HP CEO Enrique Lores has sought to justify the company's controversial Dynamic Security feature, which disables any printer with a third-party cartridge installed, by stating that non-HP cartridges might be used to inject malware into the printer and, therefore, the network it's on. Although HP cites a single research article to back this claim, several security experts have contradicted it, saying the risk is practically non-existent, and that HP could easily patch the threat through other means.

Or, you know, remove the chips from carts entirely. Reducing the potential risk to 0?
Lazerjet FTW!

Loyal HP customer

Best printer I've ever owned....HP Laserjet 1012.  Build over 20 years ago.  It's pre-chip so I can still easily find generic toner cartridges on Amazon for cheap.  Use almost daily for all these years. Thanks last generation of HP engineers.   Simple, cheap and reliable.  I couldn't ask for anything else in a printer.

HP says "3rd party cartridges are unsafe, they can infect our printers"
all I'm hearing is "HP printers are unsafe, they are vulnerable to compromised cartridges"

solution: don't use HP, use printers without "smart" cartridges.
