Japanese analysts speculate that the PlayStation 5 may be the last of its kind

There will be no successor to the PlayStation 5, according to some analysts from Citi Securities Japan. The reason is cited to be the long wait between generations and rising costs associated with manufacturing consoles. The analysts speculate that cloud gaming will eventually replace hardware-based consoles.

The same analysts predicted that mobile handhelds were dead, and just look how 3DS and Switch managed to sell a lot of units.

So, I doubt it. People already hate those day 1 updates and I seriously doubt they will like the always online games. SimCity is a prime example of how a mess that can be. NFS 2015 was another one, too.

No way.  Even online games like League of Legends and Knight of the Old Republic basically install a game on your computer and then merely update your location in the world for others to pick up.  That's why you still have to have decent hardware like an offline game. 

Are you seriously suggesting that all the millions of people playing games will just be streaming them across the internet from someone else's hardware?  Our infrastructure can't even handle pandemic Zoom calls and Netflix without lowering video quality.  Who's supposed to pay for the games hardware banks?  Are people going to pay per minute? per hour?

Cloud gaming is a half baked idea if I've ever heard of one.

Well it's time they look for other employment if that's what they are predicting. I'm already saving for the PS6 while enjoying my PS5 and if they want to make me game via streaming.. I say no, never going to happen.

These guys do not understand what console gaming is all about.

The infrastructure is not anywhere close to ready for this. I agree it's inevitable, but it's so far off it's not worth considering. Maybe it'll be ready by the time I have grandchildren at the rate it's going. But between data caps and greed, it still might not even be feasible then.

[The Future]

Cloud gaming is already here i.e. Xbox Game Pass/xcloud, Stadia, etc. Being able to play 4K games streamed onto your smartphone, tablet, or laptop will eventually be possible after 5G service & fiber internet gets rolled out everywhere over the next decade. It's potentially good for gamers as we'll be able to play games at the highest settings for $15/month without having to shell out $1000+ for high-end gaming rigs/graphics cards/console upgrades every year. They just gotta figure out how to bring down latency for multiplayer games.

If this ever happens I don't see Sony being a hardware company anymore. They can't compete with Microsoft (or google or amazon) in the cloud business as they don't have the resources or capabilities. Sony will end up becoming a games publisher. This is what I believe is Microsoft's likely long term strategy.

Fun fact:  PSN online network/services already currently run on Microsoft Azure cloud severs lol
