Not quite 'novel', Razer came out with the Mamba Hyperflux over two years ago with the same principle. But due to such mice being expensive and the necessity of having to carry the mousepad everywhere you take the mouse, along with slight hiccups for users who lift off the mouse before placing it back on the surface, this concept hasn't taken off.

There's also the Logitech Powerplay system which they're pushing through the G ecosystem.

This thumb button arrangement looks a lot like the old rat 7 mmo. I had two and both failed as the front thumb button was connected at base by approx 1.5 mm of plastic. Lasted about 4 years on both and fatigue broke them. Poor design. Contacted madcatz to get a replacement thumb button and they support nothing pre 2018. Overall too risky for my $200.
