An AMD Ryzen 7 Microsoft Surface Edition (MSE) listing has been spotted on UserBenchmark. This APU, which is likely to be the Ryzen 7 4980U, is expected to feature in the upcoming Microsoft Surface Laptop 4. It wouldn't be surprising to see Microsoft offer surface with last years chips. They have done that before and you can never expect anything better from them if you're trying to avoid disappointment.
And they are quite likely to cancel releases if they feel like it.
In short, you just can't trust Microsoft.

not to mention that their customer support and quality control are horrible..... I bought a surface laptop 3 once, and it came with a defective keyboard where if I clicked the E key, it sat down it didn't come back up... Had to wait 3 weeks for them to "repair it." when it came back, every single key was wobbly af and was it was horrible to type on. I had to return it. I'm never buying a Microsoft laptop again..

To be fair, Zen 2 chips aren't slow and will be more than usable for some time to come.
Its possible that the general shortage of chips is preventing MS from using Zen 3, though, to be fair, MS has been a bit slow on the uptake of newest hw, so for them to offer a generation older hw is not exactly a novelty.

If the price is low, then it should sell pretty well.

Surface consumers want Cezanne, because hardware is going to be priced at a premium anyway.
I don't see how a last-gen component in a new premium device can compete with other laptops unless the chassis gets a special redesign with one-of-kind features that are actually practical.

I don't understand Microsoft always releasing these outdated models on release. It's like they are not really serious about being a hardware company, It's just a box to tick. It's a potty as they have the potential to excel but waste it with overly complex systems and poor support.

Two generations old actually, as like all latest AMD APUs it still has a Vega GPU instead of RDNA2.

Zen2 still beats the latest Intel offerings, that is not an issue. The real problem is with the GPU. Intel Xe is handily beating all AMD APUs, Zen2 or Zen3 cores, they all come with the aging Vega GPU. Yes, you are reading that right, Intel now has a better iGPU than AMD.

The only hope is that, unlike the mainstream AMD offerings, this custom silicon may have the latest VCN: hopefully it has AV1 hardware decoding and better hardware encoding. Once you realize today's normal has lots of videoconferencing, you'll understand the significance of the VCN for a device like the Surface (and why the enterprises are still buying Intel in 2021).
