That embarrassing realization when the Core i9-9880H has outperformed every Core i9-9980HK laptop thus far

The slowest laptop with the Core i9-9980HK is the Dell XPS 15 7590 which the Core i9-9880H can outperform by as much 25 percent. If you're out looking for the "ultimate" Core i9 performance on mobile, the i9-9980HK offers only a marginal boost over the fastest i9-9880H laptop in the best of scenarios.

Isn't this likely due to the fact that all of the laptops tested with the 9980HK have been too thin to cool it properly?  It'd be interesting to see how something like the MSI GT75 or Asus G703 with that chip would fare.

No duh. A laptop isn't good enough to cool an 8C 16T CPU that turbos to 5 GHz. Of course the hk is better, but it doesn't belong in a laptop.

Funny thing though, if you undervolt and overclock the XPS15 7590 it is possible to run the CPU at 5GHz single core for a while without drop. For those that need single core speed for, for example Photoshop or other software they get their money worth out of it.

Furthermore, if one would weight thickness and cost to the benchmark as an additional metric I wonder if the XPS 15 still looks that bad. An i9 XPS 15 can be bought for 2200EUR and most likely less $ in the USA...

Intel really needs to deal with this issue of companies throwing unlocked chips into laptops that can barely cool 45W. Why did it start anyway?
OEMs managed to behave even when the 6/7820HK were available, not to mention the mobile extreme editions

Another thing to consider: you're getting 9750H laptops in bulk for reviews but the 9880H options feel real scarce in comparison, as do the 9980HK ones (well... it'd be understandable for the 9980HK bc ultrapowered beasts tend to launch together with ultrapowered chips)

The MSI 9880H gets handily beat by the 9980HK in a lighter M15 R2 with the correct settings and re-paste.  I did the full 30x R15 runs and posted the results.  Average of 1842 and didn't even hit 90c.

Can't share the link it would seem, but google "Full Speed 9980HK With No Throttling" and you'll find it.
