In a letter to Transport Canada, the automaker insisted it only submitted a backlog of $43 million rebate claims in the last days of the ZEV program. This site has a very peculiar bias going on. I stupidly thought I would find a unique German-European perspective to match the high quality reviews the site produced when it was "notebook check." That combination would be a serious category and counterpoint to all the US based sources, but instead y'all seem to be posting article after article promoting the most minor Tesla news (new door knobs shiny) and defending Tesla with its unquestionably problematic leader who is the world's richest and possibly most powerful (disproportionate) person. If I just wanted "tech news," I'd read wccftech or any other source with more balanced focus (and that's saying a lot saying those gamer sites are more balanced, but they providing better coverage).
Kinda SUS. So they were just sitting on 43M of unclaimed rebates just because. And there were a lot of articles regarding Canada running out of money on that rebate program. They had to have had an influx of buyers.
Someone had to be grossly incompetent for this to have happened naturally.
This schmusklar letter confirms that they tried to rob Canada and eligible EV buyers from the EV rebates. I have seen a comment by a canadian guy, that this rebate applied only to actually sold EVs, it could not be claimed for future sales. A dealership could not claim rebates for unsold cars, expecting to sell them later.
It also makes no sense that they had a backlog of unclaimed rebates, because rebate program had limited funds and other dealerships were applying for the same rebates.
Tesla claims that those EVs were sold through four dealerships. To process 8600 rebates in three days at four dealerships requires processing 2150 rebates per dealership, or about 700 rebates per dealership per day for three days. If there were hundreds of people at Tesla dealerships over the weekend it would be in the local news and all over the social media, but apparently nobody saw large crowds at Tesla dealerships.
I hope Canada makes schmusk scammers pay full price and those responsible will get actual prison terms.
Maybe Musk should start a DOTE (Division of Tesla Efficiency) to see why they were so inefficient on filing.
But as John Wood point out, 2150 per store over 3 days is 707 per day. Assuming the store is open for 9 hours (10 a.m. - 7 p.m.), that means each store was selling 78.5 cars per hour or 1.31 cars per minute each and every minute of every day. If a store was open for 8 hours per day, that's 1.47 cars per minute or about 1 every 40 seconds!
