Sony has showcased a supermicrosurgery robot with 4K 3D cameras and OLED displays to assist surgeons during operations on the smallest of blood vessels and tissues. Automatic instrument exchange eliminates the need for an assistant to hand over surgical tools, speeding up surgeries.

Are there separate words that can be used to distinguish remotely operated/controlled machines from autonomously controlled machines?  The word robot seems to be used for both, though in popular culture (and dictionaries) the latter meaning prevails.
