Title: Sketchy rumours point to Micro 4/3 smartphone camera sensors — smartphone design or image quality may suffer as a result

A slew of rumours out of China claim that Micro Four Thirds camera sensors will soon make their way into smartphones. While these sensors would massively improve low-light capability and potentially revolutionise video, the physics of smartphone and camera lens design suggest otherwise.

One can theoretically make it compact-ish, but short flange distance is a problem, specifically angle of light rays on sensor edges.

You could make it compact, yeah, but image quality will start to suffer as you start removing corrective elements in the lens to make it more compact. You might also start seeing aperture numbers get pretty high, which sort of defeats the object of a bigger sensor (more light and more foreground separation). That said, I would actually love a M4/3 smartphone, even if it is as chunky as that cursed Energizer phone from a few years ago.

Looking at foldables I can just laugh.
Maybe it could go to VR headsets.
