Title: Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i 16 laptop review: Great mini-LED panel, but unnecessary cost-saving measures
Post by: Redaktion on August 02, 2023, 11:49:17
Lenovo is aiming for the crown in the category of 16-inch multimedia laptops with its new Yoga Pro 9i 16. Its trump card is supposed to be the high-resolution and bright mini-LED panel. However, there are unusual weaknesses in the build quality and, in contrast to the 14-inch model, features such as Advanced Optimus are missing.

Really Lenovo? This is your High-end consumer/creative laptop and you skimp out on the ports, and ram and battery life for the money you asking for? The flickering screens have to stop as well! SMH

Millions of buyers of AMOLED smartphones and laptops do not notice flicker, because they have a slow nervous system. Manufacturers don't care at all about the minority of those who have it fast enough to notice the flicker. Business always ignores the problems of minorities. Except when these interests of some minorities (we will not point fingers at them) intersect directly with the interests of the owners and management of companies.

Even refusing to buy models where the buyer notices some unpleasant flaws does not help to improve the situation as a whole, if the buyer belongs to a minority of buyers, and the rest do not notice them, either due to their nature or due to technical illiteracy.

no Advanced Optimus and HDMI 1.4 only...
A premium laptop with only 4k 30hz HDMI output is a joke in 2023.

There are supposedly 8 billion inhabitants on the planet. There will always be eccentrics with money who will buy even such technological garbage. Most often, such trinkets are bought with corporate money ...

Sadly - no. HDMI is limited to 4K@30Hz, but you can use USB-C for up to 8K (so 7680x4320) @60 Hz without issues as it has DP 1.4. This is Lenovo's PSREF for the device (https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/Yoga/Yoga_Pro_9_16IRP8?MT=83BY) and it is really weird how they nerfed HDMI here:

Quote
  • 1x HDMI, up to 4K/30Hz
  • 1x SD card reader
  • 1x Headphone / microphone combo jack (3.5mm)
  • 1x Power connector
  • 1x USB-A (USB 5Gbps / USB 3.2 Gen 1), Always On
  • 1x USB-A (USB 5Gbps / USB 3.2 Gen 1)
  • 1x USB-C® (Thunderbolt 4 / USB4® 40Gbps), with USB PD 3.0 and DisplayPort™ 1.4

Now compare that with the same machine in its 14" variant (https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/Yoga/Yoga_Pro_9_14IRP8):

Quote
  • 1x HDMI 2.1, up to 8K/60Hz
  • 1x SD card reader
  • 1x Headphone / microphone combo jack (3.5mm)
  • 1x USB-A (USB 5Gbps / USB 3.2 Gen 1), Always On
  • 1x USB-A (USB 5Gbps / USB 3.2 Gen 1)
  • 1x USB-C (Thunderbolt 4 / USB4® 40Gbps), with USB PD 3.0 and DisplayPort™ 1.4
  • 1x USB-C (USB 5Gbps / USB 3.2 Gen 1), with USB PD 3.0 and DisplayPort 1.2

🤷♂️

The creaking base panel is, unfortunately, also present in the 14inch variant, when the machine has warmed up. It is very annoying, makes the device feel cheap and it really is a pity that Lenovo did not simply include a screw standoff in the middle of the panel to offset the flexibility of the material used.
