The new MacBook Pro 16 2023 with the M2 Max is Apple's most powerful mobile device. Both the CPU and the GPU performance have been increased and even the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti can be challenged in some tests.https://www.notebookcheck.net/Apple-MacBook-Pro-16-2023-Review-M2-Max-challenges-GeForce-RTX-3080-Ti.694175.0.html
The memory subsystem was not checked again.
Where are the promised 512 bits of memory bus controller and 400GByte/s?
I see when convenient the comparison with Windows laptops is done, when is not ie: Blender GPU test for example it is hidden. The title is misleading.
Ho Lee Fuk!!! What's with those response times?
XD
Battery life looks pretty stellar but that display is garbage for gaming and with Raptor Lake + Nvidia 4000 series GPUs out, M2 doesn't stand a chance in real world performance. Better luck next year Fruit logo lol.

The reaction time implies 12Hz. This is even extremely unsuitable for video watching or editing, something that Macs are advertised for.
Under light load (WiFi v1.3) it has twice the battery life of Intel, but under heavy load ("Load" condition) it has half the battery life of Intel. This is interesting, although there is the question of what they are doing under "Load" conditions.
In my case, I often put a relatively heavy load on my PC when I am out and about, and as a result, the I feel that Macbook Pro does not have such a long battery life compared to Windows machine with 12th gen.
Light load Intel has WiFi battery durations up to 15:47, AMD up to 16:48 so both in the league of MBP 16 M1 Pro. Stop spreading the myth that Apple would have twice the duration! This only applies if you compare MBP to bad Windows notebooks.
3060m competitor ouch, rtx 4050 might perform better in games & 3D.
RobertJasiek
Light load x86 might be comparable, sure.
But the thing is that under load MBP runs for 8-9 hours without throttling the CPU where Intel and AMD would throttle like mad or will cut the battery life by 50%.
You are missing the point here. It's not about Apple vs Intel or AMD, it's about ARM vs x86 architecture.
You don't see x86 cpus in phones (also mobile device) for a reason.
So no actual gaming benchmark comparison? Misleading I would say....

I do not believe it is a difference between x86 and ARM for the following reasons
- The Surface Pro X was slower than the Intel CPU and had a similar battery life (about 6 hours) even when using only ARM native apps, under MS Office-like load.
- In Chromebooks, x86 has gained significant market share despite it's proximity to Android and affinity for ARM. intel had publicly stated that Jasper lake would be "the last Atom-only CPU", but due to its popularity in Chromebooks, ADL-N was newly designed. It was first tested by Google and is believed to be at Google's request.
- According to the "Intel Alder Lake-U Review" on this site, the MT power efficiency of the Ryzen 7840U is expected to be comparable to that of the M2; limiting the 13900K or 7950X to 60W will give power efficiency close to that of the M1 Ultra.
From these, the following can be deduced.
- The advantage of M1 is mostly attributed to the advantage of N5. If Comet lake had been manufactured on N5, the M1 would have been less impressive and the SQ1/2 would have been garbage.
-The second advantage of M1 is due to its high IPC and low clock orientation: while Intel and AMD raise it to 5 GHz in ST operation, M1 keeps it at 3 GHz, making it more power efficient. x86 also lowers it to 3 GHz or lower in MT operation, then the efficiency of M1 and x86 become to be similar. Especially in high load, the M2 Max Macbook Pro lasts only 1 hour, whereas the ADL-H+GeForce combination lasts 2 hours.
In addition, the following is expected.
- Theoretical values show that if ADL-P is kept the same design and the same clock, the power consumption will be reduced by 40% just by manufacturing with Intel4 and by 65% with Intel 20A. Consequently, it is more efficient than M2.
- Both Intel and AMD are oriented toward high IPC and low clock designs.
Perhaps, but I expect the 2024 holiday season to be a showdown between M3 and Arrow/Lunar, with Intel winning in both power efficiency and absolute performance.
I always love how they post a misleading title of "challenging" and then you read the price of 5000 euros 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The moment Apple pulls the plug on Rosetta, that's when they will isolate themselves like the PowerPC days....
Apple has removed the capability from their laptops to run any operating system other than mac OS.
In essence they removed the right of the owner to use HIS device the way he finds best. You buy a mac but Apple decides how you can use it. Can someone sue them please!
The only compelling reason for me to buy a mac in the past was to combine the high quality hardware with my need to run Linux and open source compilers/software.
Not any more... Hard pass

Even the fact that most business software is missing on Macs immediately reduces their score by 20%.
the response time parameter become more useless in this review because they have changed the tools compared to the last time with m1 chip, so, I can't really know wich one is accurate. all what I know both the m1 and m2 display is very slow to unacceptable level, especially in 2023.
this screen affects everyday usage, but most of the youtubers don't cover that as they want to please apple to receive free product. unfortunately notebookcheck follow the train.
I don't know if I can trust this review.
So Apple buyers is a cult, if Apple moves to AMOLED, everyone from in a sect will buy AMOLED, even with low-frequency PWM. To make a non-flickering and matte, high-contrast microLED Apple did not succeed, like other manufacturers. And the only hope is an alternative to the damned, for the eyes, AMOLED.
We all are waiting for microLED, although while waiting for it will grow old ...

I bought an M2 Macbook pro two weeks ago. The display is a dream, I see no issues with it, even playing some games (like Rise of the Tomb Raider) at native resolution. Coming from a series of expensive Windows laptops, the display is the most visible and permanent improvement, next to build quality and "snapiness" of the laptop overall. Comparable apps start significantly faster than on my windows laptop (which as a very fast NVME drive).

Bruh maybe it's because no Windows laptop has a good trackpad or good speakers (besides XPS)?? Or doesn't overheat or have more than 6h battery life (those with higher than Intel U series)?? All those in 1 laptop!

x86 simply beats all Mac's with the presence of a numpad, which is required in all business and scientific applications. That is why the x86 market share has been overwhelming for 30 years. The choice of laptops is orders of magnitude larger. You are not limited by a always glossy glare screen, a skimpy keyboard (and not the best tactile) and a bunch of other restrictions. And x86 OS is many times more flexible than MacOS and has thousands of times more commercial and free software. New macbooks are good in terms of the level of hardware inside, espessialy in term of balance, but not on the choice for buyers of external design and expansion options. And overpriced always. And they will never equal the base of accumulated professional/entertaiment software...

It's important to consider the potential bias in Notebookcheck.net's reviews of MacBooks compared to Windows laptops. While their reviews may provide valuable insights, some readers have noted a tendency towards giving MacBooks more positive reviews than Windows laptops. It's worth approaching their reviews with a critical eye and considering other sources before making a purchasing decision.
It already seems to me now that Apple, because of their arrogance, is destined for the fate of IBM in the x86 market 30 years ago, only now in the Arm niche. If Apple is smart enough, they need to become a new analogue of Intel - sell their processors to everyone who wants to - and thereby become an analogue of TSMC, only in the Arm processor market, because. they have assembled what is clearly the best development team to date.
And then they will be able to produce the best processors on the Arm architecture for the entire market, but on a much larger scale, loading factory lines like TSMC to the eyeballs. And laptop manufacturers on them will receive a ready-made solution for creating different models of laptops, and not what it is now.
Thus, Apple will be able to reign in the market for at least another 10-15 years. And then we'll see...

Nobody will spend more than $1000 for a laptop chip, and I don't think Apple will sell the chip at any lower price when M2 Max has almost same performance of 7940HS+4070.
Quote from: Yi on July 02, 2023, 02:15:24M2 Max has almost same performance of 7940HS+4070.
1) In such comparisons, it would be good practice to specify that the 4070 Laptop GPU is meant.
2) A general statement comparing speeds between an Apple-M-Chip and a PC's CPU+GPU combinatíon is meaningless because speeds vary extremely depending on software etc. Examples:
a) M2 Max might be faster in hardware encoding video transcoding.
b) For machine learning compute, I have found that 4070 desktop is 32.5 times as fast as M1. According to NBC TimeSpyGraphics testing, 4070 desktop is 1.58 times as fast as 4070 laptop. M2 Max is 5.56 times as fast as M1. We get 32.5 / 1.58 = 20.57 relative speed of 4070 laptop vs. M1. So 20.57 / 5.56 = 3.7 relative speed of 4070 laptop vs. M2 Max.
And no, 3.7 speed of a PC notebook is not "almost same performance". Stop brainwashing people with respect to Apple-M speeds! We are sick of lies, desinformation and uninformation!

The difference only in the speed of the memory controller M2 Max vs the best x86 solutions for laptops reaches 5-6 times in favor of Apple. Why give this shameful trash x86 such a high rating against such a shameful background for him? Not to mention battery life and noise in a balanced profile.
x86 has real advantages, just like Apple's drawbacks are obvious (a monopoly on solutions and their narrowness of options), but in general, there are fewer and fewer well-made laptops in retail exactly on x86. And even more balanced decisions ...
Again, and I've said it before... mini-LED is not a display type you're comparing apples to oranges if you are comparing mini-LED with OLED or IPS. mini-LED is only a backlight technology. You do not even mention if the screen is IPS LCD or something else?
