Quote from: RobertJasiek on January 13, 2025, 21:52:57It is much clearer than NBC's write-up. So, as a German, I am still safe. Our Swiss friends not. Not Biden's friends, I see...

It's still not clear to me. What's stopping a German selling these to a Swiss neighbour or vice versa a Swiss buying them off from Germany, EU or the UK?

I also feel like these restrictions are doing countries a favour. Do you know how much 50k RTX 5090s would be? This is tax payer money. I think people are suffering bigger issues right now with energy prices, cost of living, etc than to be worrying about AI.

Reading one of the sources,

apnews.com/article/biden-ai-artificial-intelligence-chips-computer-trade-4495b5b4a48e856dc612e7abe3e47d20

"The allies without restrictions include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

Users outside of these close allies could purchase up to 50,000 graphics processing units per country."

It is much clearer than NBC's write-up. So, as a German, I am still safe. Our Swiss friends not. Not Biden's friends, I see...

I read and understood this - and saw the fine print of at most 50,000 per country. It may well be that the intention has been unclear to Biden himself. We will have to see.

So, e.g., in Germany, starting tomorrow, we cannot buy any Nvidia RTX 4090s and, from January 30 on, any RTX 5090s (Or any RTX 5000s? Not to mention faster data center or professional cards.) because the 50,000 GPUs limit for Germany will be used immediately by the military, intermediate data centers, the industry etc.?!

Biden and Trump do not have any clue what they are actually regulating... Are they forcing Nvidia to move to Taiwan or Ireland?

Please read the entire article.

"Under the new policy, 18 trusted allies, including the UK, Canada, Japan, Germany, and South Korea, will enjoy near-unfettered access to the most advanced U.S. AI technology."

The Biden administration has introduced new export controls on advanced AI chips, granting 18 key allies broad access while imposing strict licensing requirements on others. The new rule aims to limit China's access to both advanced chips and AI models. The policy aims to safeguard U.S. leadership in AI and prevent adversaries from leveraging the technology for military and strategic gains, but it has drawn criticism from industry leaders like Nvidia for potentially undermining American innovation and competitiveness.
