The real reason why Linux is a niche OS in desktop is because most laptops don't offer it as an option. If every laptop came with a linux option that is $50 cheaper (saving on windows licensing), it would easily take over.

As for software support? Over 90% of the population only needs a web browser these days really. But over 90% of the population isn't going to bother installing their own operating system

What software do you use, microsoft office? I think it's about the only one not ported yet.

Wow... that's a pretty steep Linux tax - over $700 for a N200/8GB laptop...
one more reason why Linux has a hard time to be more than a niche OS for desktop..
