probably nice to have, but not that anyone was really asking for it
av1 is less energy efficient than vp9 and the likes, both for sw and hw impementations, up to 10 times worse

Android expert Mishaal Rahman confirmed that Google Tensor G3 is the first smartphone chipset to have hardware-accelerated AV1 encoding support. The SoC has hardware-level support for encoding at up to 4K 60 FPS, but no current application can take advantage of it, which is likely due to the lack of platform support.
