Well, it was a good PR stunt by Apple, as well as a mouthful of fresh air for small companies which can sell leather accessories for iPhones or iPads without any competition from Cupertino. Sure, leather laptop bags or backpacks for MacBooks don't sound bad, either. Most likely the market for this kind of accessories was getting smaller for them, so they took advantage of it.

Over the past few months, Apple has been replacing all leather accessories with comparable products made from partially recycled fabric, which Apple calls fine mesh. For this practice, Apple has now been awarded the title of Company of the Year by the environmental protection organization PETA.
