"Just works" is the PR myth but I have never experienced my iPad to just work. E.g., charged over night to 100% next needs to be dis-, then re-, then disconnected to the power plug to work to overcome the lie that the battery was lowly charged. I perfectly understand that a 7 or 8 years old battery has a short lifetime but this behaviour is iPadOS stupidity instead of it just working. Even worse, the necessary cold start runs on maximum brightness to increase the likelihood of having to repeat the process of "warming up" the battery. As if Apple had never seen any old battery, it just does not know how to make it just working. The cynical suspicion is intentional behaviour to motivate earlier battery replacement for the outrageous ~€120.

I have had countless devices with low battery and they all behaved as expected: short battery duration or eventually no reaction at all. My iPad is my only device ever that does not just work on its low battery for its remaining short duration.

And that's how Apple can be a one trillion dollar company. Their userbase just doesn't care about such a thing. All they care is they want something that just works.

As my personal practice has shown, using a charging current of no more than 0.8-0.9A (preferably 5V) at least doubles and often triples the battery life in terms of time of use. At the same time, it charges very well. You lose extra hours on charging, but you don't have to change the battery for 4-5 years, even with daily charging. All idiotic fast charges are designed to kill the battery as quickly as possible so that the consumer quickly comes for a new gadget. Well, if consumers still have money for it...and if not, the manufacturer is no longer interested in it. The manufacturer has a problem if the majority of the target group of consumers no longer have the money (and desire) to frequently change gadgets... and this is the time that is gradually coming on the planet for companies like Apple.

I am still using iPhone XS and it shows 89% peak battery capacity. But I go out of my way to make sure to preserve battery health by not charging to 100%, not using wireless and fast chargers, not charging in hot places. It is a corporate phone and I knew I had to make it last.
I do not know how Apple calculates remaining battery capacity but at 89% my phone has a very noticeable battery degradation. When the battery goes below 50% any active use will eat it up super fast. And I don't mean playing games - I mean browsing the web, messaging apps (generally light tasks).
If newer iPhones reach this point only after one year with the same consequences then it is a disaster. I understand why people would be upset by this.
And everyone should care about this to push Apple and others use better batteries if those are available.
Chinese manufacturers brag about super fast charging speeds that shave off several minutes of charging time. But if this means that they use better quality batteries with longer lifespans then this is an even better unadvertised "feature".

13 PRO is the exact same thing. I was at 88% at 12 months!!

Fast forward to the lawsuit that claims Apple is manipulating their own battery check software to make sure most batteries that would qualify for warranty replacement won't....
